An event focused on the management for the online dating and the social networking industry called iDate 2007 (Internet Dating) was held in Miami, USA from Jan 15-16, 2007. The popularity of the event could be gathered from the fact that there were 300 executives in attendance.
Some interesting new technologies and advances are being made to make dating a more realistic, safe and globally accessible event.
The company, HonestyOnline, offers a certification system that makes sure you are what you say on your profile. It checks your background history and people who have been in your life (e.g. whether your ex is an ex or not). It digs really deep and practically knows what you earn. It uses a database called CrimSAFE (an applicant screening criminal evaluation tool). It even goes the extent of dropping down to your house, take your pictures, vitals and bodily fluid for tests (to make sure you have nothing you can communicate). On passing all those tests, you graduate to a sticker on the site, saying that you are ready for love.
Vendors also presented ways of going on a virtual date and even getting married. They have introduced the notion of avatars, using which a person can attend get togethers or even go out on a date in a fancy restaurant.
Mobilove has brought dating to mobile phones, an area which is rapidly increasing in size.
Plenty of Fish is one company which decided to ignore the profiles which people have created and choose a unique way of providing matches. They use the knowledge they gain from people looking at various profiles, to tune their results. They believe that action speaks louder than words.
Overall the conference boasted of big names and some nice things and ideas came out. I wish all the people who use online dating the very best of luck and do try out some of these newer sites.
