Icons are a necessity with almost every application/website one creates. They help you provide a better user experience.

I have compiled a list of sites providing icons, buttons and images for free! (click on images to enlarge them)

  • Web 2.0 Icons By Nicolai

    • Web 2.0 style icons

    Download host of web 2.0 style icons in thumbnail form as well as large sizes for your use for free (speech bubble, chart, home, computer, email, globe, rss, butterfly, printer, cell phone, security, wine bottle)

  • IconGalore

    • Free XP Style Icons

    Windows XP Style Icons designed as per Microsoft standards are available for free for non-commercial purposes

  • MySpace Icons

    • Icons for MySpace, hi5, Friendster, Xanga, Piczo, Orkut, TagWorld, Tagged

    An extensive collection of icons for use on MySpace, hi5, Friendster, Xanga, Piczo, Orkut, TagWorld, Tagged, or any of the others. You can get the html code to embed the icons anywhere you want. The icons are well arranged in several categories like: animals, celebrities, summer, beach, bikes, birds, butterfly, cat, disney, couples, cute, girly, celebrations, doll, flowers, food, holidays, sexy, naughty, party nature, school, money, heart etc.

  • Free, Open Source icon set

    • Open Source Icons

    Around 245 icons for use in web applications. Released under Creative Commons license. All the images are gif files. They are categorized under “Alerts and color codes”, “Buttons”, “Documents and folders”, “Misc Metaphors and objects”, “Text Editor, “User and groups”

  • 72 Free Vector Glass Buttons and Bars:

    This set is a pack of free vector glass buttons and bars for your webpage or blog. Since they are in vector format, they can be easily manipulated and scaled to fit your layout. There are some extra alphabets appended at the end of that post.


  • Web2.0 site’s logo: Here you will find 3D like logos for the popular web 2.0 sites like del.icio.us, flickr, youtube, technorati, feedburner and also an icon for rss. The images are available for free usage and can be downloaded as a zip (which has png and ico versions of the files)

 

  • Ganato.com: provides 16 sets of icons in psd format. The icons are grouped into 16 sets namely: document icons, email icons, folder icons, user icons, trash icons, symbols icons, weather icons, mix icons, CD icons, book icons, bullets icons, toolbar icons (4 sets), number bullet icons. You can use Easy Graphic Converter to convert from psd to gif, jpg etc.

  • The Drunkey Love iconset: Version 2.0 of “The Drunkey Love Iconset” consists of over 100 16×16 icons in PNG format.

  • famfamfam.com: provides four set of icons. They have one of the biggest collection of icons.

    • Mini
    • Flags

  • N.Design Studio (Mini Pixel Icons):  Over 320 mini pixel icons! All Free!
    These mini icons are 14×14px with transparent background. They are specially designed for header or side navigation buttons. Feel free to use these icons for your site (personal or commercial). However, if you are using more than 10 different icons, you are supposed to give a link back to N.Design Studio. You may NOT resell these icons.

  • Sanscons: Sanscons is an icon set that allows for CSS-based coloring and framing. The icon design is exactly the same, the only thing missing is a background - allowing you to set it to any color you so desire. Bitcons, the predecessor of Sanscons, is a mini-pixel icon set (16×16 pixels) containing 121 individual icons for various subjects.

  • ASPNET Icons: more than 300 professionally designed icons for ASP .NET applications.

 

  • Markup: has six set of icons.

  • Parrotdise is a free and colorful set that contains 18 parrot icons.

  • MouseRunner.com: It has a huge collection of icons in various categories. Most icons are available for Mac and Windows and they come in various sizes, plus the PNG’s that make up the icons are also included.

  • FeedIcons.com: It has collection of rss feed icons in various formats, sizes and background colors (supported formats: AI, EPS, SVG, PSD, PDF, PNG, JPG, GIF)

  • Sweetie: 150+ icons licensed under Creative Commons license (commercial use if fine)

  • graphicPUSH Blog Icon Pack: This free blog version contains ten core icons that will get you rolling on your site with the basics like commenting, categories and more.

  • yellowpipe.com: has a comprehensive collection of icons for Mac, Mac Office, Windows (XP icons, Vista icons), Linux(Gnome, Tux) etc.

  • Deviant Art: has a collection of icons in avatars, emoticons, OS Icons, Cursors, Miscellaneous, Dock Icons categories
