Swivel: Discover And Share Insights From Data

Swivel is a California based startup which was founded in December of 2005. It realizes the value of data and allows users to explore data and share their insights with others.

Users can:

  1. Explore data
  2. Compare data
  3. Share insights from data
  4. Upload data

For any data, one can see the graph, the data, cloud view and the map view (newly introduced Swivel Geography). You can also get custom code to embed the views for the data in your blog. Like the one here:

Number of vehicles per state

or this one:

Relative Risk for Current Smokers - Men vs. Women

You can visit their featured graphs page to see many more interesting insights.

This is indeed a very novel way to encourage people to share data and carry out analysis on them and compare with other sources of data. I believe this tool will present to us many new insights which were hidden in data silos.

How to open each link click in a new IE Window/Tab?

Any link in your outlook or any other application when clicked opens up in Internet Explorer (assuming default browser is IE). The annoying part is that the click ends up using the same Internet Explorer window that is already open (instead of opening the site in a new window or tab) and you lose the site which you had open.

The way to avoid this and configure your IE to always open any link clicks in a new tab or window is to do this:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced

uncheck the checkbox “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts…” and click ok.

Now all clicks will open in new IE window (IE6) or in new tab IE7.

Find the running status of trains in India

It is always frustrating to call the railways enquiry number to get information about train arrival as no one picks the phone. After having similar experience yesterday, I started looking for any websites which provided an updated status information on trains in India.

The quest led me to this page: http://www.trainenquiry.com

The site asks you some basic information about your train number or you can even enter the train name and soon you know the upto date information about that train.

Here is a snapshot of the application:

the site has been developed and is maintained by CENTRE FOR RAILWAY INFORMATION SYSTEMS (CRIS). Besides this they have several other project running:

Some Fun and Useful Google Map Apps

I have been experimenting with Google Maps for a recent project and needed a tool to get latitude and longitude for any location. Here are two tools written to get the same:

  1. Get Latitude and Longitude for any address you enter
  2. Get Latitude and Longitude for any place you click on the map

These should be fun to play with and one can use those geocodes (latitude and longitude) in various applications.

Google now has support for calculating geocodes for any location (earlier people had to use Yahoo to get the geocodes)

Some other fun Google Map apps to try out:

  1. America’s top 25 meanest drivers cities
  2. A set of interactive Google Maps on different categories on the topic of the 7 Wonders of the World
  3. Ever wondered which map technology is better, Google maps, Live Maps or Yahoo Maps? Try this tool and see for yourself
  4. Da Vinci Code Locations
  5. Forbes Magazine list of the Drunkest Cities in America
  6. Google Maps + Craigslist to create a visual housing search page via dynamic overlays of Craigslist home listings on Google Maps
  7. Up-to-date gas price search with Google Maps station display
  8. Track your packages with Google Maps and RSS feeds! Track UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL
  9. Map a phone number area code to a location
  10. Helps you determine if you are paying too much in rent. Enter an address, apartment size, and rent. It maps nearby units and shows a meter of your price versus min, max and average

I am developing a special section called “tools” on this site, where I will put utility and fun tools and apps.

Moving To Bangalore: Choosing an International Moving Company

moving companyMy wife (Archita) and I worked real hard to organize things around our move and so we thought it was best if she wrote about some of the experiences herself. This post has been written by her.

We had been nurturing the dream of coming back to India for a few years and April 2007 saw the final realization of it. There are many Indians who share the same desire but they never return daunted by the challenges that come with the move. Based on my personal experience, this was by far the most difficult and challenging decision but if we had the right information and right contacts, our move could have been less painful. This blog is an effort to help people in similar situation so that coming back home can be smoother for eager returning Indians.

We spent days and days trying to find a reliable and cost effective moving company.

You have to be very careful while choosing the moving company. Whatever they say, there are always hidden charges. Initially it was very difficult for us to compare because all of them quoted similar service. The only thing we were looking at was the price. We had almost decided on one of the companies when my husband found them on the black listed company site. We finally decided to go with Air 7 Seas even though their quote was higher than the others as one of my friends was using them too and we found them to satisfy most of the things in the checklist below. But unfortunately, even with them our experience hasn’t been the best so far. My advice would be to clearly ask for detailed description of each item they quote. You have to be well aware that they play with words. When they say door to door service, they actually mean your doorstep. You have to keep the boxes outside the door (on your doorstep) and they will drop it back in India on your door (outside the house). You will have to pay for handling, lifting at the origin and at the destination. I haven’t received my shipment yet so will reserve further comments on them for future.

It generally takes 45+ days for things to get delivered from USA to India, so make sure you carry the must needed things with you.

Here is a checklist to ensure higher rate of success choosing the movers:

  1. Try and stick to the list of recommended moving companies (the list can be found at movingscam).
  2. Set up appointments for movers to come to your house and do an in-home estimate
  3. Do a thorough investigation on the moving company you choose. Make sure it’s not one of the black listed companies (you can get an archive of blacklisted companies here). Remember lot of these fraud companies change their business name time and again to avoid legal issues
  4. Do not go by the cheapest quote – if you compare the prices from 3-4 companies, you will get a rough idea of how much it would cost. Anyone quoting very low price must have some hidden charges
  5. Ask for detailed description. Keep a written record of whatever they explain and ask them to commit in writing to things they have said
  6. International moving companies generally have tie ups with local companies to pickup and deliver. Get the details on those companies and check on them by calling them and checking their records on the Internet
  7. Check for the volume they quote, whether it is with palletization(Warehousing and distribution of goods on pallets designed for easy transportation, a basic form of containerization) or without palletization (if palletization is done)

There is a very good article on How to Find a Reputable Moving Company which I think everybody should read before selecting a moving company.

That’s it from me for now. Good Luck with you search. If you need any further information, feel free to contact me archita.prasad@gmail.com
