There are times when you are connected through a very low bandwidth network (dialup, wireless carrier card etc.). If you try and open Gmail, it is a pain and despite hitting that refresh button over and over again nothing seems to happen and patience does not help either.

There is a way to access the basic features of Gmail in such scenarios. Instead of going to the regular Gmail URL, use this URL https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html which shows you a basic html view of Gmail. This is good enough to check mails. Another great thing is that this interface is advertisement free! Sometimes when Gmail fails to load after many attempts, it will by itself advice you to load the above mentioned URL.

Google talk, keyboard shortcuts and plenty of other things are not available in this view.

For people who want even faster load time, they can use the mobile Gmail frontend available here: http://m.gmail.com
