Moving To Bangalore : How to decide on Schools in Bangalore?

Updated: 20th November, 2007

We have started Bangalore Schools site dedicated to providing quality information about International schools in Bangalore, CBSE Schools in Bangalore, IGCSE Schools in Bangalore and ICSE Schools in Bangalore. The site allows users to share their experience on schools and also to rate the schools on a scale of 1-5 (star system)

Bangalore is famous for Engineering colleges but I must say it has plenty of schools too (kindergarten to XII). That means more choice and more confusion as to which one to go with.

We wanted to live in a place which is close to a good school which we decide on. Our residence was dependent on the school we chose.

First we made sure we got the following things with us before we left US:

  1. A letter from the school stating which grade he was in and till what grade level was in on various subjects
  2. A letter from Kumon (Maths Class he used to take) stating his level of proficiency in Mathematics)
  3. His latest grade sheet from his school

My wife’s brother was a great help as he was already in Bangalore and had done school hunting in past for his son. Based on his list and talks with other people we created a list of possible schools and we started calling them. Some of the prominent ones are:

  • Bishop Cotton Boys School
  • Bethany
  • Baldwin Boys High School
  • Ryan International
  • HAL Public School
  • National Public School
  • New Horizon Public School
  • The International School, Bangalore
  • Inventure Academy
  • GreenWood High
  • Indus International
  • Freedom International
  • Canadian International School
  • Mallya Aditi International School
  • Stonehill International School Bangalore

Most of the non-International schools like Bishop Cotton’s, Bethany and Baldwin had huge class sizes (around 60) which we thought was a little too much. Since our son was in a Montessori system with around 29 students in his class, he used to get personal attention and we were looking for something similar. His inability to read and write Hindi (he can speak and understand it very well) was also a concern as most of the schools required him to know Hindi.

International schools started looking very promising for the requirements we had even though they were very expensive (fees ranging from 2 lakh to 5 lakh per annum). They offered small class sizes (~24) and were willing to teach our son Hindi from scratch. They were also very lenient on Kannada as the third language and said he could study French or some were even ready to provide Spanish teachers (our son studied Spanish as his second language in US). The International schools have come up with the sole purpose of taking care of NRI kids and kids whose parents have to shuttle between Bangalore and other countries.

Mallya Aditi school said they had no vacancy in grade 3rd which was a disappointment as my office was close to that school. Ryan International we did not like as we heard some bad reviews about it. We decided that Sarjapur Area (near Outer Ring Road) was the best location as it had plenty of International schools in the vicinity. We went to Freedom International and they said all the seats were full (we were trying to get admission in the month of May). The International School Bangalore (one of the most expensive ones) said the same thing: no seats. We all went all the ay in some interior area looking for DPS East and when we reached there, we realized that their building was still under construction (sometime in mid April 2007). On asking the guard over there, he said school will come up in June, 2007.

We liked GreenWood High and Inventure Academy. We did not like the staff of India International even though we heard few kids go there and are happy. Finally, after visiting all we decided on GreenWood High and Inventure. Inventure provided a very relax atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for extra-curricular things. GreenWood high seemed to us to have the right balance of academics and fun and one of the prime reasons for us opting to go with it was it having the principal of Bethany school on the board of directors. We also found out that lot of kids from Sarjapur go to GreenWood High. We talked to the CEO , Head Mistress and the Grade 3rd teachers of GreenWood High and then decided to go with it.

Tomorrow is my son’s first day to school here in Bangalore and he is going to GreenWood High. They have AC buses to pick them up and drop them from fixed pickup and drop points.

Let’s see how it goes. There is plenty more information which I could not share in this post for the sake of conciseness. If you have any questions about schools in Bangalore, feel free to leave a comment here and I will be more than happy to help you out or point in the right direction or people who had experiences will come out and help with their reply here.

This must be really useful for anyone undergoing school hunting for their kids.
You are really correct - Bangalore must have more world-class schools.

How would you compare Indus and Inventure. How would you rate them.
What apts complexes are good and close to Cisco’s new campus at Cessna Park on ORR? Am thoroughly confused wrt place to live so I can be near Cisco office at the same time time to commute to Indus or Inventure is not bad.

Thanks a lot. Will appreciate if you can email me back at hiranthacker@gmail.com

@Hiran: I must say I have heard lot of good reviews from parents in my apartment complex about Indus. Inventure has a more relaxed approach to studies, that is one reason why we did not opt for it.

We live on ORR and some of the good apartment complexes are:
      Akme Harmony
      Springfield
      Sobha Garnet
      Suncity

All of them are close by. All schools have bus service to and from ORR so no need to worry.

Can you please let me know about Ryan International school. You mentioned that you heard something bad about it. I am just thinking about this school as it is near to our residence on Bannerghatta road. Can you please respond below

    9. Vikas Sah, 21. September 2007, 1:53

      @Shivaraj
Lot of kids from our apartment complex go to Ryan international but that is on airport road somewhere.

I do not have much idea about the one on Bannerghatta road (near Bannerghatta National Park) .

If I get any info I will update here.

Are there any ICSE schools near Indiranagar with option to take Tamil as a subject. I heard that St Anns, Cathedrals, Bishop Cottons, SCVK all have Tamil but are quite far.

      Thanks,

I have to select between these schools for my son in Grade 2 - which one you suggest . 1) Presidency (Bilekhalli), 2)BGS (Opposite to Meenakshi temple), 3)PSBB. 4) Ryan. All these schools are on Bannerghatta road and started newly last year.

    12. Vikas Sah, 27. September 2007, 13:37

Interesting. We are contemplating moving from the US to Bgl in the next 3-6 months. Two kids, one in Grade 10 and another in Grade 7 . Our thinking also is that they will go on to do undergrad in India and, if necessary , return to US for Grad. Is it advisable to go to one of these IB schools ? Does that still allow them to join the undergrad mainstream in India ? We are considering the very expensive TISB — are there cheaper, equally good schools in Bgl ? Would much appreciate any advice.

    19. monof2, 16. October 2007, 14:11

      Hi
There are many good schools in bangalore ,only thing is admission. Most os the schools
open admissions for LKG or first grade. After first grade it is very difficult to get admission in a good school. It mainly depends whether they have some empty seats or not.NPS is undoubtly the best of all, But Kumarans,Dps,Greenwood are also very good which has class size of 30 students.Admission in these schools is also very difficult.

I would like to Know about BGS NPS on bannerghatta rd.BGS and NPS both have very good reputation,so how is BGS NPS doing. It’s a fairly new school. Does Dr Gopalkrishna of NPS has some influence on it.

Thanks in advance if someone can share their views on BGS NPS.

      @Deepa
I am disappointed with the way things are going with Greenwood High and I will be posting an update on them soon.

For upper KG I guess they have a separate school in Koramangla and I do not have much idea about it.

Ramana - Please chose any one of these PSBB>BGS>Presidency>Ryan

    26. Shivaraj, 29. October 2007, 0:59

Monof 2 : I think your selection of BGS NPS is not a bad idea. It seems BGS is a very good school. However, when I asked opinion from my friends about comparison between BGS & PSBB, I got slightly more favourable response to PSBB. Hence, I chose PSBB for my son. These were just subjective opinions, let us see how my son will do in his school. Let us hope for best.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT RYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL REPORT IN KUNDANAHALLI BANGLORE..

I am planning to put my daughter,

    28. monof2, 29. October 2007, 8:40

Ryan intl is still a better choice compared to many other schools .
But if you compare them with NPS,DPS ,Kumarans,Greenwood high etc ,it may not
score well.It has old teaching methods like writing one questions ans 3-4 times to learn it or Just to keep silence in the class(thats what I got to know from a friends son who was in grade 3). Fees also I believe is not too high. It’s a very big school with every class having section from A-M.
That’s why admission is also not very difficult.
Greenwood high is a good school but I’m not sure 84,000 fees for grade 1 is justified or not.
If someone is having first hand experience with BGS_NPS,please share it .

    29. Deepa, 29. October 2007, 10:51

      Hi,

sorry to bug you again on Green Wood High, kindly can be more precise ,
there not doing good in academics or is there any issues with teaching method

      kindly revert back

      Thank

    30. Vikas Sah, 31. October 2007, 2:31

Academics is average. The reason I am beginning to dislike them is that they are not giving personal attention to our son (one they had promised).

Also if you not lucky and do not do good research on teachers, then your kid may land with some teacher in some section which might not be as good as the others.

Sports also they are not encouraging new comers to learn new games.

Could anyone help me in giving information about schools which have good standard but not very expensive. Could be CBSE board. I have recently taken job with a analytical company and paying donation could be expensive for me.

Can anybody share their views on CMR Junior NPS,Kalyan Nagar?

    38. Vikas Sah, 6. November 2007, 1:30

      @Vidya:

If you are looking for an international school then Greenwood is one of the affordable ones.

National Public School, Koramangala, Baldwin Boys School , Bethany might be others you should consider.

    39. Vikas Sah, 6. November 2007, 1:31

      @Sikha:
International schools are relaxed that way and your kid need not study Kannada there but other schools might have stringent rules. That was also one of the reasons for us going with international schools

The Principal “Shailaja Behl” does’nt deserve to be in such a responsible position.

I doubt the Respectable Management who didnt quite look into her Credibility.

They dont even see what she is upto or They are not botherd about the school anymore.

The Teachers, the house keeping people & the other employees as dying to leave this Respectable Organisation whose reputation is going down the drains bcos of its very dear Principal.

I agree this is a very bad school, all the good teachers have left. they do not value their words, make very big promises for the development of children but do not want to deliver, esp. the principal. Princi just do showoff and nothing more than sweet talking. Don’t consider the school ever

I am not sure with the statement Bangalore has “many schools”.

For the population the number of schools are less. Which is why schools dont take phone calls or have “interview procedures”…

Compared to what you find in Madras/TN schools in Bangalore are less (or less per population).

This is in response to query about Alpine Public School. Please don’t go by the comments you found on net (sent by Apporva). My daughter goes to this school and we didn’t find anything bad with the school. It’s a new school (in its 2nd year) and we found the principal to be quite committed and doing a good job. What we specially like is stress on extra curricular activities (drawing, painting, drama, swimming, sports etc.). The text books they follow (the school is affiliated to CBSE) are of very good quality and the building and classrooms are impressive (though not as big compared to other schools). If you are staying on or nearby Kanakpura Road, you should definitely consider this school. We preferred it over DPS of which we heard a lot of negative feedback from many people.

      Hi,
I have a 5 year daughter, who goes to Kindergarten in USA. I am planning to relocate to India and am looking for the best schools in Bangalore. I am planning to move to Padmanabhanagar. I am looking for the best schools with little travel time. I am interested in experiences from people in knowing
      1. How difficult it will be for a kid from US to get acquainted to the education system back in India? (In case the child starts in second grade)
      2. When is a good time to start looking for admissions?

      Appreciate your response.

      Hi All,
Iam planning admission for my son (pre kg) at Ryan International school on bannerghatta road. I visited school this week and found the campus very good. I have no idea about the staff and teaching.
Can you pls help me with your feedback on Ryan Internaltional school on bannerghatta road. Would be grateful for your advise on same.

    69. Sam, 11. January 2008, 7:54

Ram - you wrote about your move from US to Bgl.. I find myself in a similar spot but from Malaysia - We are contemplating moving from Malaysia to Bgl in the next 3-6 months.
Two kids, one in Grade 10 and another in Grade 7. We are in a similar boat.
In our case - My elder son in year 10 will have to remain in International curriculum - so we are looking at an international school (TISB, Sarala Birla, Canadian and Mallya Aditi are the four shortlisted till date) for him while the younger one we are contemplating shifting to CBSE (NPS, Bishop Cotton).

Is it advisable to go to one of these IB schools ?
For the older one I would advise the IGCSE or IB schools as he / she will find it extremely hard to manage the transition.
Does that still allow them to join the undergrad mainstream in India ?
yes I guess so, unless someone else knows better?
We are considering the very expensive TISB — are there cheaper (cheaper comparatively are - Sarala Birla - boarding boys only, Canadian and Mallya Aditi) , equally good (not sure - Sarala Birla, Canadian and Mallya Aditi) schools in Bgl ?

Would much appreciate any advice. Did you get much response - I too am looking for similar advise.

VANAKKAM : REG TAMIL AS SUBJECT
      ——————————————————-
      Raj,

Following schools in Bangalore have Tamil as subject
      -Baldwins
-Cathedral High school (ISCE upto X, plus1 and 2 are Karnataka state board)
      -Bishop Cottons
      -SCVK schools
      -Ebenezer International

Many of schools featured in the children’s drawing section of Tamil newspaper Dinathanthi Bangalore edition’s Monday Magazine section have Tamil as II language.

Also to best of my knowledge Hindi imposition is not compulsory in the above mentioned schools unlike other schools where the Hindi imposition at least as III language is required, with imposition starting right from LKG.

      Hope this helps.

      - Suresh John

    72. Arulraj, 18. January 2008, 8:00

Thanks a lot Raj for info on studying Tamil in Bangalore. This second and third language is been one of the biggest problems in Bangalore.

I have heard in New Horizons school the Hindi teacher publicly insulted a parent because child was not doing well in Hindi.

Why these people give so much importance to drilling Hindi than make it optional and giving instead giving more emphasis on technical subject - Maths, Physics, Chem, etc than language is pathetic… Even the international schools are only international in name and fees and have Hindi drilling as II and III language as their prime feature.
      But thanks for the info.

How is freedom international school of HSR

    74. Sachin, 27. January 2008, 5:03

Freedom International is a good school with ample opportunities for children. The faculties are smart and dedicated. The management has put efforts to maintain quality of education and arguably similar to international standards

However there seems to be partiality shown bythe Principal with some staff which forces some of the good teachers to leave.Hwever, this should not impact students in anyway as long as management realizes the same and fix it.

    75. Sutapa, 27. January 2008, 9:31

      Hi,
My kid is just 5 years. We also will go back to India 2009.Could you please tell me what is the requirement criteria to get admission in First grade. Is it required to know Hindi.?Could you please tell me syllabus of upper kindergarten ICSE board/CBSR board.

      Regards,
      Sutapa

    76. Jagannathan Jayaraman, 29. January 2008, 13:14

      Hello Sutapa

As stated by Mr Suresh John most of the schools are making political pointing in drilling Hindi right from LKG. But the schools above I think dont require. Sadly but true what Arulraj says is also correct by own observations too.

Officially in ICSE Hindi is not required in UKG. But II language starts from UKG. But many so-called ICSE school are violating this by drilling Hindi down the throat from LKG itself. CBSE also same thing Hindi drill is not officially LKG , UKG part drilled on the throat by these schools.

In the so-called National Public School Hindi is a must to be to drilled from LKG. In Ryan “International” School also Hindi headache is the only other choice apart from Kannada.

Obviously syllabus is unfairly tilted in favour of Hindians. They learn their mother tounge and English only (only 2 scripts), whereas non-Kannada speakers end having to 3 non-mothertongue languages (including the Hindi headache).

      Indian “secularity” is sheer hypocracy.

    77. Kumar Subramanian, 29. January 2008, 13:21

I made an observation on two schools named “INDIA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL”. One is in Bangalore. Other is VIrginia.

In the one in India, you cannot learn any language you want excepting Hindi which is compulsory.

In India International School in Virginia, students can learn Tamil and Telugu too by choice.

So it is showing that schools in India may not be as favourble as one thinks. Indian culture within India is only restrited to whether students know Hindi or dont know Hindi.

Does anybody know and have more information on school ‘Mitra Academy’ in Arakere near Bannerghatta road?
I recently visited the school. The building structure is good (though not very big), staff talked nicely and had great enthusiasm to show us school, principal seemed to be a very sincere and experienced lady, they have ICSC syllabus and brochure shows they have extra curricular activities like music, dance and cultural events.

But I haven’t found any reviews so far on the web from parents sending kids there. Please if anyone has experience with Mitra Academy & can share it, I would greatly appreciate.

      Thanks.

hi, thanks for info. One important thing is missing, if I want to get admission to good school, when I should start approaching to school management? For June 08 admission I started in Jan 08 and many of good schools already finished admissions for June 08.
NPS, DPS are already over and I am not convinced to pay 80+ for nursery in International Schools.
I am looking for school near to Kormangala.

A response to all the above comments regarding Hindi being imposed on kids in Indian Schools
      ————————————————————————————————————-
Why is learning Hindi such a pain? That is our National language…a native language you can communicate with all Indians of diff mother tongue. Why wouldn’t you question about learning English? Because that is the language you can communicate with people of different nationality. In today’s world the more languages you know the better.
I grew up in Maharashtra…studied English, Hindi and Marathi at school and learnt Kanada (my mother tongue) at home. I am happy to know all these languages now. Your kids will be quick at picking up several languages. It is only hard for us adults to learn the new languages.

I am looking for primary schools that work on a North American schedule (Aug-Sept through May-June) and have found the Canadian International School, TISB, and Indus. Are there others that follow this schedule (preferred for ease of transition back and forth and holiday schedules)?

    88. Raj, 9. February 2008, 4:06

      Mr DPB

Hindi is not a pain as long as its not forced. But it is not the case.

When you have to learn in such details as done in these schools, it is a big pain in the ASS. Even bigger pain is the fact that North Indians have less portions with Hindi and no other Indian script but having to be ranked on par…giving them unfair advantage.

By the way Hindi is not our national language, it is an official language along with others.

WHen HINDI is taught at the EXPENSE of our own language, it is pain but also decrimination. By the way in this current school system the Hindians dont have to learn any language.

Mind you even Kannadigas have recently started protesting imposition of Hindi.

Do you know that NPS in Bangalore does not even teach Kannada?

The knowledge of Hindi in Bangalore and Kannada has benifited amoung others guess who? There are far more terrorist and criminal activities activities in this state by interstate gangs compared to Tamil Nadu. In TN these people can be easily recognized (as Hindikkaaran), but not in Karnataka were they pass of “another north Indian”.

    89. Arulraj, 11. February 2008, 2:23

      Hai DPB

I beg to differ from your comments on Hindi. India has not 1 but 14 or more national languages. It is unjust to insist on one on cost of the other. This is not “one size fits all”. How would northerner feel if Tamil or Kannada (with such detailed poetry) was to be studied for 4 or 5 years.

Learning a language on your own is not the same as going through it in school with pass or fail based on a exams in language not someone’s mothertougue ranked with others learning their own mothertougue.

India should not become “Hindistan” in the name of 1 “nationalized language” in place of another.

As long our country reflects this multitude it will remain united. English is the most practical language to united our country and not Hindi. One should look at happenings at the North East or the even present violence in Maharashtra.

Given that it is time technical subjects in schools like Maths, Physics etc. should be given stress and not II, III or IVth languages.

    90. Anurag Singh, 11. February 2008, 2:35

This is with reference to comments from DPB,

India is not Thailand or Japan which are monolingual. Language is most contentious issue (much more than religion) and such comments that “everyone should learn Hindi” may sound great and nationalistic but will be met with protests.

With this attidude of ignorance, you may not want to face hostility in many parts of India not to mention TN, Nagaland and Tripura. These places are not Bangalore.

      Anurag Singh

    91. Mahendra Sharma, 11. February 2008, 9:44

Totally agree with Anurag Singh. Hindi is not the only national language - all the other 22 officially recognised languages are, too - and FYI, there’s no “national” language, only official languages.
Hindi should always be an option and not forced down our throat. As for why English is so important, its so naive a question that an answer is not deemed necessary.

    92. DPB, 12. February 2008, 12:21

Oh well. I don’t wish to continue the argument and change the original intent of this blog. I understand your point and you all are right in your own ways.

My only point was that if you have a positive attitude towards any subject and consider it an “opportunity to learn” rather than “forcing it down your throat”, it makes a whole lot of difference to you and your child’s learning experience.

NPS has a very good reputation in Bangalore. There schools provide good education and their teachers are one of the best paid.

Their NPS in Koramangala, Bangalore is one of the best schools here. Another of their schools TISB in Bangalore is a world class institution.

    103. Rajendra Rao, 20. February 2008, 11:07

      About NPS:

      1) I feel its just overhyped.

      2) There’s an undue emphasis on Hindi, even over conventional subjects like Maths and Science. Hindi is mandatory, and your child must undergo a written test and clear it before admission can be obtained - hence Southerners / non-Native Hindi speakers are clearly at a disadvantage.

      hi,

my kid goes to Freedom International School in HSr.
the shool is good. But the promises given by them abt the extra curricular activitiies and hobby classes which they were suppose to start last year is not yet met.

Now they have started with the construction but last one year there was no improvement on the infrastructure part as such.Ground for children and all.

In LKG they dont have much HW and most of the things are taught at school itself.it follows CBSE syllabus.dont know how things are in the higher classes.

If anyone have any comments on how they are doing in the higher classes that will be good.

    113. indra, 27. February 2008, 17:36

      Sir,

We are currently in US. And planning to come back to India around April end. From your post, we are pretty much in the same boat as you. We are looking for admission to 5th standard. And we prefer schools around J.P. Nagar area (South bangalore).

We have taken admission forms in a couple of school from here.

What i am looking forward to knowing from you is, once we come there and visit the schools in person, how much consideration do they give in the month of May for parents who didnt approach a bit earlier (say in march or feb)?

Which schools understand the timing constraint the best?

    114. vinod, 28. February 2008, 0:52

      hi,
To all those parent who r moving back to india for some reason or the other.
If u r looking a good school for ur kids,

I really will not recommend anyone to enroll they kids in PRIMUS PUBLIC SCHOOL SARJAPUR.
they have big talks but they will not fulfill even one of those commintment they make.
It a day care in name of school,ur kids will be playing all the time.

Its a activity centre were kids r performing dramma or wasting their time in other unuseful activity.
With less ratio too they r unable to bring out the best from the kids.

They let the kids play all the time.instead of making them prepare for the test or exam.
from june to jan the take the acedamic thing slowly ,giving must more importants to other stuff.
and the couple of month [end of the year]they rust with the portion ,each day a new chapter.
whether the child understand or not.

And above all u will not be knowing what the kids is studying day to day ,as no worksheet,or any kind of notes.

on asking they will give u only one answer,we r doing lots of worksheet at school ,
and ur kids in doing good,
      u don’t have to worry,

and when the result come u get a surprise that ur kids grades are down not even average.
on asking they say let ur kids enjoy his childhood not pressure him up.
which i think is the worst excuse i get from them.

They say they have qualified teachers , specified in phonics or computers.
which i don’t think so as my child knew how to read and tell the spelling of any word using phonics, and now the situation is like he has forgotten the sound of phonics.

i have a request to all those parent who r looking for school, please don’t waste ur money, and on other hand don’t waste ur child future enrolling him in PRIMUS PUBLIC SCHOOL.

I REALLYU HAD A VERY VERY BAD EXPERIENCE.
      thanks,
      vinod.

    115. vinod, 28. February 2008, 6:36

      To indra,
Here in bangalore school enrollment start decand select people get interviewed in jan .
Most of the good school like NPS,they will not consider and one after the enrollment period is over.
there r few school like baldwins they might consider if u pay them donation extra other than the regular one.
if u r looking for school in south ,DPS has its branch and they will consider u.
and they will ask only the regular donation that they ask the parent u enroll first or the parent who r moving back or got transfered.
so in my view u can look for DPS as ur option and then try other school.its CBSE.

they r lots of other school [new school] which opened this year itself, but i will realy not recommend as by the time the get adjusted ,and put the curriculums in order and to decide what to do when kind of thing the year is over and ur child will not gain any knowledge that year.
They may take ur kids in mo nth of june also or in next year2009 feb too like PRIMUS PUBLIC SCHOOL.
They need kids so badly that they give admission to the kid in end of the year too.

Apart from all this they charge the parents in nameof admission or any other specified fee ,to over come there expenses that they had to build the school.

if this information helped u ,i will be happy to help u again.
      regard,
      vinod.

      Hello Rajendra

NPS is a hyped up school. No extra curriculars. Hindi only as second language, obviously 10 years down the head. Wonder how the permission is given in Karnataka. Kannada is a convenient go-by. It is no way just a “opportunity to learn” where non-native would face insults for failing in someone else’s language.

I have heard of even parents being publicly insulted by the Hindi teacher at New Horizons for the same reason.

It is sad that in this country Maths, Physics, Chemistry and other technical subjects takes a backseat at the expense of this. CBSE has outdated syllabus in all these.

Even CBSEs website is descriminatory. English is optional in Bihar. Hindi is compulsory everywhere.

Indias biggest shame is in its schools.

      Hello,

Thanks for your post. I have a couple of questions. We are planning to move from the US in August. Which is the best scholl to approach during thsi time for a Grade II admission. Also, do you know of any good schools in Banashankari and Jayanagar area internationa type schools. Lastly, have you heard of NAFL and how good is it? Thank you.

    120. Narendra, 1. March 2008, 14:57

This might help parents moving their children to schools in India

Our son studied from Kindergarden to Middle school in US and he was all set to go to high school last year. We suggested that he try out going to school in india for a year. He was reluctant (naturally). It also meant he will be in boarding school since we are still in US. After much search and deliberations we put him in Ebenezer International school in bangalore. He will be finishing his first year away from us. It has been painful for us but our son had settled nicely and intends to finish his high school in the same school.

About why we decided on this particular school. It was a mixture of background of its founder, our requirements and sheer karma (if you believe in it). After searching several schools we almost gave up and were ready to head back to US (We had gone on vacation) with our son. We just happened to go to Bishop cottons high school where we were told the schools ex-principal (Dr Ebenezer) has opened his own school. We went to the school and met him. Looking at his background and his experience in a reputed school we were convinced that this is worth a try. Moreover they had a flexible boarding policy. Our son is in school during weekdays, during weekends he is in our parents (his grandparents) house. This way he does not miss the house atmosphere much.

About the school. Ebenezer is a international school, though more than half the kids are from india. My son’s class has kids from US, Singapore & Korea. My son took up the IGCSE syallabus, which is a cambridge based syllabus. It is a bit harder than here, but not as touch a CBSE or ICSE. Second language is a must, my son took Hindi. He had very little background in Hindi but the school is helping him come upto speed. There is board exam in 10th grade after which he can continue the IGCSE curriculum or switch to something else.

About studies. This is a 1 year old school! They seem to be just settling in. From my sons feedback, it seems that the studies are fairly good & challenging. We do interact with the teachers, but not to the extent we would like to. The school is setting up their web site which apparently will allow us to know on a regular basis the goings-on in the school.

Overall, mixed bag. The good thing our son is happy. Their has been a sea change in his attitude/perception of India. The other day he mentioned, he would like to remain a Indian Citizen (we are getting our US citizenship shortly). The not so good thing is, as we all parents think, future! Have we done the right thing? Ironically it is our son who feels we did the right thing, though a year ago we were telling him it is the right thing to go explore and see what it takes to study in india (:-)

My suggestions. If you are thinking of putting your kids for studies in India, plan on visiting atleast 3-4 schools, make sure you take you son/daughter with you, keep the option of getting him/her back open. Finally make sure you have some cash, they are not cheap!

Hope this helps parents facing similar dilemma.

My daughter and son are born and brought up in the US. Daughter is entering 9th
and the son is entering 6th in 2008-2009 academic year. I am planning to send
them to school in bangalore for the rest of the years. We are keen on Canadian
International school. Does anyone have any idea about this school ? Also if I want
to move back what are the good areas around this school ?
Would appreciate any light one can throw on the school and the areas around it.
      Thank you.

      Hi Raju,

Eduation in India has become a big buissness.

we too came fromUS 2 years back, and tried to put our son in the best school.
It so happened that every school ask a big donation ,and once the child is in either he is pressured up with lots of studies if u go to schools like Baldwins,Bishop cotton or other school they have 60 student in a class and with around 6 section in each standard.
If u go to other school with less ratio, those are international school,as they are too expensive ,apart from that most of them r all located in outskirt in south bangalore,
      like Ryan,Indus,India internation school.
they say they r international but they have ICSE SYLABBUS.
Couple of the school r in north like Aditi and Canadian international school.
They r few school too that have name like DPS has branch everywhere like south ,north ,east, west it is CBSE ,Green woodhigh school.

If u r looking for a convent school for girls Sophia has a good reputation.

If u r looking for co ed then NPS has a good reputation ,and admission are limited only.
All the best with ur research.
if u need any help u can email me sharmavinod 92 @yahoo.com.
      Regards,

In no where else on the internet and elsewhere you will find list of schools in Bangalore where Tamil is offered.

BTW HINDI IS NOT OUR NATIONAL LANGUAGE. INDIA HAS 14 OFFICIAL ONES.

For Hindi speakers there is no concern. They dont have take any new language or scripts. Further Hindi is imposed everywhere in Bangalore. So perhaps it may not be your concern.

The II language favouring only Hindi is biggest descrimination of racist India. The descrition of “Arrogant American Indians within India” as quoted in a Hindu editorial sometime back is not without reason.

Yes the purpose of this blog is share thoughts. It is only through blogs like this one knows where to children and II language is a critical point. Atleast 5 schools in Bangalore who want to teach mothertounge like Tamil this is the blog. These are listed IN THIS BLOG and not anywhere else yet.

ADVISE TO PARENTS MOVING TO INDIA
      —————————————————–
To parents who are considering moving to India for schooling. I would advise to think twice depending on who you are and what you to imbibe you child.

If you want to impart your mothertongue on you child; and considering Bangalore; probably USA/Canada/Australia or wherever you are is better. Your child will learn the respective language better there through Association classes. ‘Coz schools here load a child with 2 languages which may not be the mothertongue or spoken language of the child.

In most cases Maths, Physics,Chemistry would be sailed through. Failure comes in the II or III language which will be usually be Hindi / something else not your mothertongue.

If you are OK with Hindi, I would still suggest to avoid certain schools. These 100% result schools collect donations and in progressive years filter out students in order to achieve “100% results” (only 12 are allowed to sit for the exams). So beware of 100% result schools. These are money making institution which will demotivate you child by filtering out and keep fresh donation cyle going. Best example of 100% schools are NEW HORIZON SCHOOL, RYAN “INTERNATIONAL” (i.e. international fees)

Also beware of schools whos teachers insults students or their parents for failure in certain subjects esp Hindi. These children will definitely not grow to be good citizens but will grow with hatred.

Could you give me more details about Primus. Which class is your child studying in ? Do they not have a dairy which would say what they have done every day? Is your child following the ICSE or IGSE syllabus ?

Please do respond at the earliest.

      Thanks

      Hi,

Mrs. Cynthia was the principal of Ryan international school, brookefield. Now she is not here.
Regarding ryan, It’s an average school. The fees is ok but i don’t like the attitude of the teachers there. They will beat the kids for even small things. The teaching is very bad. There is no extracurricular activities.Lot of partiality. The number of students per class is high.30-M3, 40-I std.. 60 increasing

Please provide us pros and cons of this school.

    138. Betty Alexander, 17. March 2008, 7:18

      Hi,
I am Betty Alexander and I am hoping to move to Bangalore by May. I have 3 kids a daughter aged 9(std 3) and twin boys aged 6(sr. kg). They are currently being educated under the Maharashtra State Board. We are currently residing in Mumbai. My husband works in Bangalore since Apr 07 and resides in Borewell Road Whitefield.
At this juncture we are in an absolutely unplanned and confused state with regards to choosing the right school for the kids. We did an internet search to get the list of schools available but have been unsuccessful in deciding which ones should we be trying for. My husband has been regularly visiting schools during weekends to find out about availability of seats and admission procedures. Your writeup was quite interesting and I felt you may be able to help us.
We have always been interested in Missionary or Catholic schools. Since there are 3 of them money will always be a secondary concern. However, we are interested in giving a good education. Your choice for your son was Greenwood High. So has your experience been and How easy or difficult is it to procure an admission there? What are your other recommendations? I have read ur views on Bishop cotton and other missionary schools however would u be able to give me more info?
I hope to make an informed decision after your reply to this email.
      Thank you.
      Betty

      Hi Deepti,

As i said they say all good stuff so we enroll r kids in their school, once the child is in,they forget what they said and what promises they made.
first they say the child will get personal attention and later they say we want the child to be independent,so we r doing like this or that.

with small ratio of kids too they r unable to bring the best from the child.
When the teachers is not in a mood to teaches the kids go out and play or play in the classroom.
Though they have diary so called thing but still u don’t get the any kind of infomation that what they have done today or what they r about to do.
when u ask they say we r doing worksheets in class room and when u want to see the worksheet they try to postponed it.
As they worksheet r not send home on daily bases. They keep in class so when they will be parent teacher meeting they want to show the parents what great thing they did in class.
and that too after the exam ,when the results are out.as u will not be able to help ur child in any way during the exam.
They say leave your child on us we will take care of him,
and when u do that ur child grades fall down ,and when u ask what happen they say some kind of stupid [sorry to say]answer and try to take out negative point of ur child saying his mind was somewhere else or since few days he is not responding or blah blah blah.
when we ask ok let us know what method u r trying to teach so we can help our kid ,they say we do in a natural way so the kids should use his brain and do,its not like other schools where they the kid memorize the answers blah blah blah.

To say the truth either they r not capable to maintain the school ciriculum or they have choosen low grade teachers, which have just step in teaching and cannot maintain only not more than 5 kids in each standard.
I sometimes feel the teacher r not so experiance.

one more as 75% of the school kids r teachers childrens only and those kids get first prferrence in every activity, drama ,sports or studies matter .

teacher kids get A grades whether the really study or not,
and the class teacher give more attention and more pamparing kind of thing means no scolding or other stuff which other kids will get but teachers kids r kept on higher pirorities.

hope this info help u out to make ur decision,if still u need any info please mail me i will be glad to gelp u.
As i got have spoiled my child life I don’t want any parent o do the same mistake what I have done.
as once u pay the amount and that too its not a small amount again change ur child next year and pay again a huge amount in another school,so please help ur child and don’t spoil his/her life enroll him /her in PRIMUS .as ur child will lost interest in studies and u will not be able to get hos confidence back that he can get good grade and he is the best.

      Regard,
      Vinod.

      Hi,
We have shifted in bangalore a few mnths back with my 2.1 yrs old daughter. We have already started getting tensed about her admissions as some schools say that we need to start off her admissions a year in advance i.e, after dassera this year for her admission in a mntssry next year when she would be 3+. We stay at Airport road , L.B Shastri Nagar and we need to put her in a school which is closeby and which has icse board. I would also prefer some school which has a lot of ex.cur.actvts
Could you also give me some background about Vibgyor and Greenwood (fees, education, management, teaching staff). It will be really gr8 if you cud suggest some gud school names and the contact nos.

      Thanx
      Rupa

      Hi Vinod ,

I came across this website while searchng for school related info on google .My son turned 2.5 yrs last month and we are very concerned about his schooling given that in Bangalore you have to plan for admission 1 year in advance . We stay very near to Marthahalli bridge . We would prefer to put him in CBSE based school but are open to good school even if it is ICSE based . Could you pls suggest what are decent school which would be closer to my area . I was conidering NPS Indiranagar , DPS East but that might be far and not sure if they would consider us given the distance of our residence from the school . Also if you could pls tell me what is the typical time frame when they start distributing the application forms etc . Also last thing we are considering to put our son in a Nursery in one of the play schools e.g. KidZee, Euro kids etc . Is it advisable . Any info on these shall be sincerely appreciated . regards , Amit

      Hi Amit,
Yeh now a days its has become a big burden kind of a thing to enroll their children in best school.

As i have said all the school now a days r doing a good buisness.
For admission for nursery the child should be 3 or 3+ by june 2.
As the child will be not eligible if he /she is 2 years 10 months in good schools.

There r couple of school that do take admission if the child is 2years and 8/9/10 months old.

but later they said if the child is not copping up with the teacher or other kids they will start giving u stupid answer and talk as if ur child is having problem,

So if ur child will be 3 or 3+ please enroll him or her in a big school once for all.

If not the child will be 2year and 8/9/10, so please let him have fun for a year and enroll him in some preschool like kidzee .

Please don’t even think of enrlling ur kid in euro kids,

its only the name that is running other wise the place r so unhygeinic that ur child will be always sick.

If ur r residing near marthahalli so I can give u a name of a school which has name as well as preschool as well as for higher education the child is auto matic transfered.

the name of the school is India Internatinal Preactivity school at outer ring road ,they have transport srevice too and they have 3 or 4 groups ,I am not sure but its start from 1yr 9 months to 2 yr 9month then 2yr 10 months to 3 yr 9 months and so on i am not sure wether they have ukg or say kindergarden means 5 to 5+ over there or the child is transfered to the higher school branch which is a little far from wipro office at sarjapur road.

hope this info had help u a lot,if any thing else i can help u with i would be glad to help any parents.

      Regards,

      Vinod.

    154. vinod, 3. April 2008, 2:14

      Hi Megha,

To my knowledge as i am in bangalore since 2years i came to know Kendriya Vidyalaya school, nps and Dps r 3 CBSE schools and r good.

If u need an admission in the first 2 school u should be there during the time of admission as the enrollment form for the next year june will be given in last year month of nov, means like if u want ur kids to go from june 2009 then u should be here to enroll ur kids get the form in 2008 nov ,as the first 2 school r very perticular and they have limited opening a year.

As i heard from people these 2 school r the best but totally academic no extra cirriculum,

the other one is DPS its is also CBSE with extra cirriculum ,as u might have read before in my column that it has 4 branch but i came to know know that they have only 3 branches they have extra cirriculum like hobbies class on every friday 2 period that is of child choice they have atleast 8 option which one he / she want to choose apart from this they have swimming ,tennis .As for the admission in this school is the same as the other 2 but there r chance of u getting admission later but the only possibilities is if seat is available ,that to the child have to write an acessment test depending on that they will give admission.

Regarding IT courses i am sorry i don’t have much info but i will try to find out and let u know.

hope this info helped ,if u have any more ? please let me know i will be glad to help u.

      Regards,

      Vinod.

      Hi Vinod,

Thank you very much for your comments on DPS South. I have sent the application forms from here and they have asked us to contact once we are in town. Do you have more information regarding the entrance tests they conduct? My daughter does not know any second language. She is learning Hindi letters at home now. How much knowledge is expected? In addition to that, do you have feedback on Brigade and PSBB schools.

Thanks once again for your time.

      hi vinod
Your writeup was quite interesting .we have a 4 year old son and got LKG adimission inGreen wood high school for next year. If you have any idea about this school pls share it. in october we got adimisson in green wood and in january we got a call from NPS. That time we already paid the fee and all in green wood . so we have to prefer green wood high. still i am little bit confused about that but no other way. any way thank God we didnt choose primus. last year he went euro kids , like you i have the same oppinion about euro kids .

      deepa biju

    163. vinod, 10. April 2008, 23:07

      Hi deepa biju,

don’t worry so much ,i know we as a parent we want the best for our child.

NPS is a good school but Green wood is also a good school.

And ur son is only 4 years ,u can continue this school for up to 1 st and later if u didn’t like it for any reason so u can change it.

I know as we think again we have to pay the admission fee as every school have a high admission fee.

but now a days its common every parents r changing they kid school for some reason or the other after every 3 -4 years.

take it for myself ,when we came back from US at that time it was month of may and school enrollment time was over ,as we didn’t wanted to spoil our kid year so we enrolled him in baldwins ,my kid was in ukg as it was totally academic and the ratio of child :teacher was also high 1:60 ,at that time we didn’t have any choice .we paid around 25k apart from the the admission ,security and tutuion fee.

Baldwins was a good school but as we came from US and that time our son was too attached to the enviroment of US ,As in US usually they teach the kids hands on plays means while playing they teach to till kindergarden, and they have other activities too .

so just for other activity we changed his school other wise he use to get A+ in baldwins in all subjects.

then this year we were looking for good school ,one of my friend sis was joining PRIMUS,so we came and talk to these guys,in begining as they want kids so they showed big big dreams to us saying that we r the management of indus international school and we want the kid to enjoy his childhood, and we have other activity,
when they came to know that our kid was fro baldwin they said all the thing which was opposite to baldwins so we think that this is the school we want.

And now when we went and talked to them they are saying that u might have expected a very very more from us ,ur dreams a very high .u have made ur mind that this school PRIMUS will fullfill all ur expectation.

when we said u guy made us feel like that and the only this we expected from this school was only that apart from academic its should also have extra curicullum,
      thats it.
In PRIMUS too i paid around 1 lahks .

And again this year i am changing the school to DPS east.

      here again i paid around 80 k .

don’t think so much regarding that .

just pray to god that we should have a good health so we can work and earn so much so we can atleast make our kids future in a better way.

so hope u got a releive after reading my story.

      so don’t take tension.

      Regards,
      Vinod.

    164. deepa biju, 12. April 2008, 11:16

      hi brother Vinod,

Thank you very much for your comments. i am not fluent in english so pls adjust with it.
last year we came from kuwait, we dont know anything about bangalore schools. one of my friends told me Euro kids is best. so we choose that one. i told them only one thing. , now he knows only “amma i want food, i want to go the toilet , pls give me that and this ” and all because i am not fluent and most of the time his father is travalling. so pls teach him to speak in english fluently .they told me ho that is not a problem for us with in one month he can speak fluently. Still he cant speak in English fluently but his Euro kids teachers can speak Malayalam fluently because of him and his friends ha ha ha.
Last one year almost once in a week he got cold or fever or cough. That time I didn’t know why like That. But now I got an idea about that because after march 28th .he is quiet ok.
From last September on words we were searching for schools. We went Prakriya. Primus. Vibgour, Nps ,Dps south, Freedom internaionl and Green wood high.
I liked Dps but they told us the admission will open only in December ( in December my husband will not be here so no chance ). Then we went prakriya they told us u have to bring ur child here for observation and all. one day we went there and spend 2 hours with our kid. Next morning they informed us ur child got admission the admission fee is 57k some thing like that. My sons class mates also got admissions but there fee is 37k. so I told my husband they observed not only our son but also your pocket also so I don’t like that method. then we went Primus. I liked that school to see and all. but they told us no interview and all for kid, if you pay 25k in advance your sons seat will be sure. So I told my husband that is not fair . every where at least they want to see the kid but here why like this. But my husband told me see I have no time I have to go next week and here we will get sure seat so I will do that . . But my husband didn’t do that because of my opinion. But every day he asked me shall I give 25k I said not now( thank God). Then we went Vibgour it is very far away from our house. then we went Freedom international school . They told us next year no seat for new comers in LKG. About Nps every one told us NPS is the best school ho you will not get admission there they gave already 5000 forms ……. like that. So we just applied there and went to Green wood high koramangala we liked the school . They interviewed our son . He answered very well ( about colours, animals, name, fathers name, mothers name, shapes and all ) (we only prepared him for that , not from his Euro kids ) and got admission. But that time the teacher told us he is very smart but not fluent in English you have to make up it before June. (What to do still he is not fluent). Anyway we gave 70k for admission. We have to pay another 57k in may.
In January we got a call from NPS and told me ur son is short listed if you are interested come and give the fee 57k or something like that….(only fee no other donation fee ) . So I told his father both are same in NPS we only pay 57k now no other fee and in green wood also we have to pay again 57k in may . but he choose green wood high and told me the students retio is less so our son will get more attention in green wood . so we couldn’t go NPS. And now every one ask me why you didn’t go NPS even they called. So I felt very sad. That is why I asked you about Green wood high. yes Green wood high is also good school isn’t it ? you know why I wrote all these things in my broken English , I wish every parents just aware about this type of matters.

      Thank you

      For all the ambitious parents,
One thing is very important while considering the school for our beloved kids…That is ‘Location’. Till they reach 4th standard atleast, whatever the school may be, in my opinion we should choose the best available school within 2 - 3 km range from house. Nothing more!
Coming to BGS NPS and PSBB…..we had horrible experiences with PSBB. The way they treat parents — well, there is no dignity. Acedemics might be good, but they have some dogmatic rules.
      1. Like, if progress report has to be given - only parent can go and take. For working parents, it is a day off from office. they dont even allow grand parents to collect the same.
      2. Campus in Bannerghatta Road is terrible for young kids. no proper sunshade for those who go to pick up children, pollution and building is exposed to sun and rain like anything
      3. We were asked to bring our kid (3.4 yrs at that time) for some interview (damn!!) at 8:30 in the morning on Sunday. We were asked to wait in the sun till 12 noon to get our slot for the interview….asked few silly questions and took letter from us that we are responsible for improving his communication skills!!! Thats ridiculous since we send our children to school to learn such stuff!! Moreover any 3.5 yr old kid will not talk that much in front of a stranger.

The list goes on….we found BGS NPS quiet a decent one. No hassles…Principal is a real gentle man. Our son will go to LKG now…so may be next year i would be able to tell how they handle curriculum…:)

Hello, this is a very wonderful web-site. We r moving back to bangalore by the end of this month and we are currently looking for schools in and around Koramangala or Dungalore. I have gotten a job in Microsoft. Can you please let me know some schools that are closer to these places. It is already May and I am not sure if admissions will be available, however like others in this web-site I would prefer to have Tamil taught to my daughter at school. We are looking for 4th grade admission for my older daughter and LKG admission for my little girl. My older daughter completed 2nd grade here and because she can go to 4th grade due to her age, we are looking for getting her enrolled in the 4th grade.

      Thanks,

      Hi Deepa,
We just moved from Canada (Me 10 yrs DH 22 yrs)After personally visiting few interantional schools ,we decided on Greenwood for our son Gagan going to grade 4(same as one of your son).We liked the Vice principal who was always there to answer your questions.the campus is good.Classrooms very spacious with capacity of about 22-23 kids/class.Nice washrooms and alot of co-cirricular and extra cirricular activities.they offer Hindi /french/spanish as second languages. No need to take hindi if you are NRI’s with Valid passport….
One of deciding factor was Tution fees+ annual fees etc.It is lower than Inventure + way lower than Indus or TISB.we have 2 yr old twins so has to consider it.Also they give 25% sibbling concession to second and 3rd kid.Hope it helps…..

my daughter is 2 1/2 years old now.
am a bit confused whether to allow her to complete 3 1/2 and then look out to admit her in Lower Kinder Garden, as some ppl say unless the “pre kg” is done, admission wudnt be accepted to LKG.
secondly am not sure what kind of schools i need to look out for? CBSE,state etc.
am in bangalore since 3 yrs, my previous tenure at chennai, my job may require me to get transferred,

I was reading your write-up regarding your son’s schooling experience in Blore after moving from US. I am very curious to know how he is doing, how does he find the school, teachers, kids, environment etc., It would be great if you could pen these down for me. We are also thinking of moving to Blore. My child is 4 years old and is studying in a MOntessori right now. Any input on how your life has been affected(positive and negative)after moving to Blore, would be great!

      Hi,

Does anyone know about CMR national public school in Kalyan Nagar? I went through their site. But any information from anyone with first hand knowledge is appreciated. I see Dr. Gopalkrishna of NPS fame is their patron. Is this school as good as NPS? I see that this school is under the CMR jnanadhara trust while NPS is under National education trust but their uniform seems the same (at least in their sites in net). Are there extra curricular activities? How is the teaching and the interpersonal relationship between teachers and students? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

      Hi Every one,

I am really sorry that i was not in touch for a long time.

I really appreciate ur input and have trust in me.

first of all ,its regarding primus public school this was asked by shakuntala.

if u have gone through my before input ,u might have known how primus school is.

over all i suggest u to read abt it in my before input ,and i would really suggest u please think thrice before enrolling ur kid in primus.

green wood is a good school but the only think i heard abt it is fee structure is high but the ratio of teacher and kid is low,

over all again sometime it so happen everything is good but u might know the teachers nature ,that the only point that come in every school she is the one u is going to handle ur kid.

NPS IS ONE OF THE GOOD SCHOOL as they have ranked the top in icse board.

OTHER than NPS ,KENDRAVIDYALAY IS ALSO TOP SCHOOL IN BANGALORE .THIS SCHOOL ALSO RANKED TOP IN THE BOARD.

BUT the point is they don’t have any extra curriculum, only studies.

DPS is also a good school

so who ever r looking for the school ,i suggest these 4 schools apart from this they r many more school but they might have the ratio between teacher and kid 1:60

      like BALDWINS ,BISHOP.

SOPHIA IS ONE OF THE BEST SCHOOL FOR GIRLS IT IS CATHOLIC SCHOOL .

if any more question please feel free to ask .

      thanks,
      vinod.

    216. Felix, 25. June 2008, 18:49

      Hello everyone,

We are currently living in Australia and thinking of moving back to India sometime in September and would like to settle in Bangalore. Our children are of 13 and 11 years old, so we are looking for grade 8 for my daughter and grade 6 for my son. Our biggest worry is the kids schooling and their adaptability in Indian school culture. They have been born and brought up here in Melbourne, where the schools and education system is not taxing nor hard at all until they reach higher grades and am worried as to how they would cope up with the local standards, even though we might put them in International schools. I see lot of people talking about Greenwood? would be grateful to hear any inside information or personal experience of the school(not the info from their website) and also would love to hear any comments on other international schools in bangalore, chennai or hyderabad.

Another worry is that how good are these international school standards, when it comes to the year 12 public exams and the entrance exams to professional courses. Do the children passing out of the International curriculum fare competitively at the professional course entrance exams and also how is their grade 12 scores viewed by these professional institutions.?

We would be very grateful for any information/suggestions from your experience.

thanks a ton for your time and help…..

      Felix & Magitha

    217. Siva, 30. June 2008, 4:29

Here is my Review on PSBB….
I put my kid to PSBB-LLA (Bangalore) and I like many other parents are confident that we made the worst decision. My kid is in pre-kg.

      1. There are 6 Secrtions (A to F). Each section has 35 to 38 kids.
      2. School is run by a a few house wives who have no clue of what they r doing. Complete caos in eveything…
      3. Pre-School? Do they know what that is? They lock up 38 kids in the class room with no toys for 4 hrs. Thats all. There is no place for the kids to move or forget play.
      4. There is nothing called administration. They do not have any idea who is in which class , your kid came or not.

Or what is going to happen to transport.
      5. Buses are completely overcrowded, more than ANY BMTC peak traffic bus. See yourself to believe.
      6. They advertise that they have TV in class “Sloka and Technology” all 1000% crap.
      7. Go there to see their pre-school in Hulimavu and u will see the caos. Parents losing temper , kids running out of

      the class rooms.
      8. Transport arangement what they have (15K per a) is award wining. They have no idea who is comming in which bus ,

the drivers of the buses are supposed to be contacted for details. They drop the kids on the main road.

I bet if you see how they r handleing the children u will be scared.

They take 40K one time and 35K pa fees for even pre-kg and do not have ANY thing in return.

GOVT must stop this money minting business they are doing in the good name of PSBB chennai. This school is not even 1% in comparison to the Chennai school.

The new campus which is quite far away can no way be compared to any schools in Bangalore.

      Thanks,
      Siva.

Regarding Freedom International, after over a year with them, I am sad to say that I am very disappointed with the administration (or lack of it) and with how irresponsible / unresponsive the school administration (receptionist and Principal) are towards the concerns of parents.

I am considering pulling my daughter out next year…

    219. John, 1. July 2008, 6:35

      Friends,
first of all, my thanks to the founders of this site and the people who write in here. Its been informative to read each one’s experience and empathise with them.
Coming to my concern. My name is John. Me and my wife have been having sleepless nights and arguements over my daughter’s schooling. She is 2 yrs 8 months as of today, but for the last 6 months (even when she was a little over 2 yrs) my wife has been insisting we need to put her in montessori/play school/ nursery or whatever they call it. We live in Bangalore (i moved in from Chennai 3 years back) in an apartment with kids of various age groups. The subject of discussion for the ladies in the evening is on schools and when admission forms are given and how much they are paying for the admission fee etc. Well friends, its not about each of them educating the other what to avoid and how to cut down on the fees and donation and all. It seems to me that they take pride to say to the other, “my son/daughter goes to this school” and we paid 50k donation. Its the best school in the whole world. The building is super, van driver is excellent and all the crap. But in reality none of them is true. Its only their cheap ego to claim that they are giving the best to their wards, not knowing they are cheating themselvs and their kids.
Bcos of this me and my wife have had several arguements with she insisting we need to also start putting her in a montessori, then play school, then pre kg and then kg. And all I do when she starts her monologue sit down with my calculator to see what amount I need to pay by when and how to go about this.
I checked a couple of places myself along with my wife and I was dumbfolded to see the horrible conditions of the play schools or whatever you call them. Dirty mosaic floors, stinking toilets and not kid friendly toilet seats, sad looking ayahs, bunch of 15-20 kids all cramped into a 10 by 10 room (house remodelled for playhome) The so called teachers are probably as new as this academic year each of them looking for experience of one year or less so that they can start their own playhomes the next academic year.
Knowing all this, I wonder why do parents want to send their kids to these places? What makes them believe that the kids learn better under these ayahs? The kids literally sit on the stone cold floors in Blore and also eat sitting on the floors. Man believe me, my mother used to give a better place to sit and eat for our housemaid when I was young.
My advice to my wife always has been.. iam ready to spend any amount for my daughters education that will have a direct impact on her. (example like if it means I will have to buy expensive books that will be required to buy when you do medicine etc.) I will NOT spend for someone (Entrepreneur in the making) who has started a playschool for his or her development in life. Imagine its tax free money they are making. No justified fee structure, ranging from 1200 to 3000 per month. Crazy. Miscellaneous in the form of books and whatnot amounting to 3000 or more. Whats happening and why should I be an accomplise in someone’s day light robbery?

Now reading all your experiences - with the post starting right from Nov 2007 till date around 8 months and how each of you have changed you opinion about the school you thought to be the best adds a stronger point on my side. We believe we are doing the right thing and everything looks so rosy when we approach them at the time of admission. But it all fades out even within a year and we think of moving them out from one school to another. Remember the grass is greener on the other side always. Trust me, the other school will be no different from this one, except for the fact you will have to go thro the same admission process and donations etc. By next year you will be regretting again having to moving to this one.
I dont have an universal solution that Iam going to recommend to anyone here. But let this learnings help us to educate each other and share the experiences with one another. Atleast that can help new parents reading these act with caution.
      Thanks - John

I would like to admit my daughters in a good Girls School in Bangalore that would also have French as a second language. Is there any way of locating the email addresses of such schools? An ideal example is Baldwins Girls High School. There are a lot of webpages about this school, however none of them mentions the email id of this school. Can anyone suggest me an easy way to find out the email addresses or website of these schools?

      hi,
i liked your site a lot. we will be moving to the electronic city from USA somewhere in August end. my kids are in grade 1 and grade 6, and i am desperately looking for admissions in some good (not very expensive) school for them. i have zeroed in on Vibgyor, and India international. Do you think we would be able to get admission at that time? Are these schools far off from electronic city? are there good apartments (what range of rent?) near electronic city? i am sorry for so many questions, but it would be a great help if you could answer them. thanks.

hi, my kid is in freedom international school…am looking for a beter school which would focus on developing childs skills rather then grade them…pls suggest any gd school.this school spoke lot initially but receptionist and principle started showing attitudes 1s the admissions raised….n now they dont drop kids at door but hv pickup points from which we hv to pickup our kids bck home…sm of the teachers r gd but am not happy the way they deal child issues…and their attitude towards parents.books are not corrected until the exams start…or chechout every childs participation and completion of work. now teachers dont respond to any phn calls.overall we got frustrated as they always blame parents for everything even though child spends his best hours of day in school waiting to learn….no moral teachings or value workshops conducted.and even if they do parents hv no idea or info.so we decided to get child b4 he goes worst.

    229. Naren, 18. July 2008, 7:33

We recently moved to bangalore from US. We are in bangalore. I have two sons. One is enrolled in Ebenezer international since last year (9th grade) and the other is enrolled in NPS (5th grade). Both are good schools. The first one is expensive though.

Moving to India is a big deal, please do your homework before you move. Not to scare you, but it will take couple of months before you can settle down. Things are slow and take their time here. But overall, we are all happy.

      Thanks

We are soon hoping to be one of the many returning to their homeland..but armed with an American passport. We are considering Madras or Bangalore. The crazy hot summers and dearth of potable water rules out Madras. This blog is a godsend. Just a couple of weeks ago I knew nothing about the schools u discussed but now I feel like I do. I am also doing the necessary online research and weighing input from friends. The admission process seems mind boggling. None of my kids aged13, 7 and 5 really want to go back. Nobody has discussed any health issues in this blog. I would appreciate any input on how kids and adults who take asthma preventives here in the U.S cope with pollution there/ Does it get worse? What about exzema? My kids are big time into playdates and other forms of social interaction? With kids in a particular neighbourhood going to so many different schools do they get to hang out? Will appreciate any input from anyone in similar circumstances. Thanks,Vandana

      Hi,

We are planning to move to Bangalore in early 2009 from the US. Our apartment is located at the MAlleswaram-Rajajinagar area. We have 2 kids who will be going to Grade 3 and UKG respy. We are looking into 3 schools : DPS North, NPS Rajaji Nagar and Sindhi High school with a moderate fee structure.

I’ve learnt that DPS gives out the forms in November and NPS in October or so. We don’t know what is good time to take the kids back for interviews/written tests etc. Anyone with information, please let me know. It is much appreciated.

      thanks
      Kavitha

      Hello Vandana and all,

We returned recently (1.5 months now) back to bangalore from US after 10+ years of stay there. I would like to address a few concerns you have had regarding health and social interaction and kids.
While I am not sure about your asthma case, my dad who had no asthma when he lived in India despite the pollution here has had problems during his US visits due to weather. And this time as we were packing, it got triggered really bad and we had to rush to emergency just a week before we got back. So I would suggest to hire packing help, it will work out cheaper.

I don’t think excema will happen in Bangalore weather. My kid had severe excema problems as a baby and little less now at 5, but since we got back it is gone. Even I couldn’t do without applying moisturizer daily over there but here no need.

Social interaction for kids is so much more in India than over there. That is one thing I really liked about our returning back. Over there, we had to call neighbors house to ask if their kids were free to play with ours, but here @ 5PM you go downstairs and all the kids - big and small (from all different schools) are there to play. Groups of moms/grandmoms will be there watching kids or walking or chit chatting. So it is fun for all age groups.

Now for the negative side -
Travel in rush hours is pretty bad.
Kids may find it hard initially to get adjusted to the school workload as they are not used to writing as much there than here. I put my kid to a regular school not international, maybe thats why.
You need lot of patience as things that you would think will take an hour can take four hrs here. (We had such experience with our visits to doctor in some very good hospitals)
Electricity keeps going very frequently (but good our apartment has generator facility and we also installed ups in our unit)

      Hope this information helps you.

Stonehill International school in Bangalore is a new international school following IB Curriculum and beginning session in September, 2008. It is an education initiative of the Embassy Group.

Details can be found here: Stonehill International School Bangalore

For people in north Bangalore, this is an option you might want to explore and share your experiences here.

Thanks Deepa Bhatt for an insightful input. Iam going with an open mind. Does anyone agree that the newly minted international schools(Ones that have sprung up in the last couple of years) do not measure up to the established ones like TISB or Indus, American International etc. Looking forward to some comments.

    255. Preeta, 2. September 2008, 5:07

      Hi Vinod and everyone there,

I am in a big dilemma. I am expecting some help from this site. Kindly spare sometime in reading this.

My son is 3.6 months now, he is right now going to a montessori school near by. I am very happy with the school and also with my child’s progress. (i mean he is ok for his age).
We were actually planning to put him to a regular school next year(2009) therefore just started looking out for admission. (i.e to K.G1). I had shortlisted few schools around HSR Layout as I am at present staying there and they are
NPS (HSR Layout), Cambridge Public School (HSR), Bethany High and DPS. Bethany High was the first choice.
Now my problem is in 2 years time that is in 2011 we are moving to Ram murthy nagar which means I’ll have to shift school. In 2011 I’ll have take an admission again to class 1.
Is it fine if I just let him continue in his montessori for the next 2 years and then straight away put him to class 1 or is it better to shift him to one of the above school and again shift him in 2011.( My question is do the regular school accept chidren from montessori to straight class 1. He has been going their since he was 2.3months)
Have u any idea about the fee structure and the donations of the above school. What are their admission criteria? I do not want to give one hefty amount and later again shift him to another school paying again. I heard NPS is extremely costly is it true. Any idea about cambridge public school? How good is the school?

If u can please let me know about the good schools around ram murthy nagar. Where is Sri Kumarans, how far is this from ram murthy nagar? Heard it’s a good school.
Please revert back soon as possible.

We moved to North Bangalore recently. One thing I have noted is that the Ryan International School bus drivers drive like madmen (even in this crazy-driving land), so you might want to take that into account when considering schools for your children.

    260. gaurav, 15. September 2008, 0:18

Does any one knows the fees structure of bangalore school?

    261. Shakti, 16. September 2008, 12:42

      Hi Sindhu,
Don’t go fot Freedom International -they charge 50K as donation cum builing fee but the building appears to be a ruin from outside- a slum compared to the adjacent NPS
The teachers don’t correct the note books and make them write wrong answers; diferent answers are written in different sections and the principal does not want to hear against teachers.
School timings are more than any other school so the child is left with no time for anything else.
The biggest flaw is the quality of teachers, it seems they pay very less and therefore the bad quality

    262. neeta, 17. September 2008, 0:58

I read almost all review. I am in process of admission for my daughter for nxt year. Honestly I found that “EDUCATION IS VERY COSTLY. MY DAD HAS NOT SPENT THE AMOUNT FOR MY ENTIRE EDUCATION THAT MUCH I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY DAUGHTER FOR KG. TIME DIFFERENCE IS CAN SAY OF 25 YEARS.MY DAD MIGHT PAID LESS THAN 100RS FOR MY KG. NOW I HAVE TO PAY AROUND 1LAC FOR MY DAUGHTER. wHAT PROPOTION IS IT?? THIS IS STORY FOR EVERY YEAR..ANYONE HAS OBJECTION?? ” Now its compulsion for mom to work to pay the fees of kid. What if tomorrow software goes down & company kicks us??? Do anyone knows schools in HSR layout whose fee structure is not much high? (20-30K) . Plz help out.

    269. Parameswaran, 9. October 2008, 21:30

      Dear Folks,

      Very interesting.

I thought I would share my experience with the readers.

I relocated to Bangalore (from Chennai) in 2005. Getting a good school to study, a decent place to live and commute less (less than 30 minutes) is a real luxury in Bangalore, I have learnt it in a hard way.
I had long history of searching for good school for my kids. So, I decided
to be a bachelor for a year. Getting admission in a good school was a project in itself.
Good preparation (from my daughter), data and analysis(myself) and wise decision (my wife) were required to get my daughter to NPS, Kora to study VIII standard. My son could manage only Baldwin.

After 2-3 years, my daughter (Myself and my better half too) is not very happy with NPS, K.
We are very happy with Baldwin.

The lesson learned : If your expectations are high, you always get less.

we feel, we were the most blessed on the earth until three years back. None of us (myself, my wife my daughter, son, parents) were required to travel more than 2 miles to reach our destinations (office, bank, school, shopping, temple, entertainment…..). My children were studying in Bala Vidya Mandir, Adyar. The best, I have come across.

Once again … I am into research of finding a good school in Bangalore for XI (CBSE) for my daughter.

Your inputs, suggestions for this project are welcome and will be highly appreciated.

I appreciate the Blog has sustained so long with such diverse views…

      Thanks and best regards,

      Param & Family

anyone know the criteria for getting admission to NPS,indiraNagar. I am looking for admission for my son for class2. Is it purely based on the written test conducted by them or the previous academic history? I heard that the tests conducted by them are very easy and an average kid can score full marks.

      Hello,
I am returning to Bangalore in Dec 08, and my son will complete his half-yearly in Calif by then in Grade 2. What are the chances he will get admission in Grade 2 there. Is there a possiblity of losing a year. He was going to Ryan for 2.5 yrs and came to US after doing half-yearly at Ryan in 1st grade.
      Please advise.

      Hi,

My daughter would be 2 Years 8 Months as of June 1st 2009 and is going to play-school now. We are in dilemma whether to enroll her in Nursery for 2009-2010 academic year. She will complete 5 years 8months when going to 1st std ( 1 Y nursery, 1Yr LKG and 1Yr UKG). Is this age OK ? Pls suggest if any other parents are also going through such cases.

      Thanks,
      Anjali

      Hello all,

We are living in Sarjapur road and shortlisting schools for our daughter.
We have visited few like DPS East, Greenwood, Inventure, India International.

We felt like Greenwood and Inventure are too much on extra curricular. Also fee structure is too high..Not sure why such kind of fees!!!
DPS East is yet to start the admission procedure and is a new school
We liked india international because we had the feeling that they are giving importance to academics with all round development of the child. Class strength is ~25.

Please provide any feedback on India International as we are considering this school.

      Regards,
      Varsha

      Hi
Its a great move to share ideas and experiences which would help people to chose the right direction for their children. Keep up the good work.
I would need all your kind thoughts and experiences about the following schools in Bangalore: Lake Mont fort School (Medihalli), New Baldwin Residential school (Budigere, Old Madra Road), Presidency School (kasturinagar) and Ryan International School (Marathahalli). These are the options in our minds.
Also what are the main differences between schools following ICSE syllabus and those following CBSE syllabus? Is choosing the right syllabus as important as choosing the right school and does it have a great impact on how the child’s personality or future is moulded?
Looking forward to your valuable response.

      Hi Bhuavana,

We are also going through similar scenario. September born and will be 2 Year 8 Months as of June 2009. We are going ahead for Pre-KG admission. Some of the schools have age cut off 3 as of June 30.
But they do accept 2 Y 11 MOnths kids for Pre-KG. So kids just 2 or 3 months elder will be getting admission. So why to waste 1 year?
I personally feel that waiting for another year ( 2010-2011) is a bad idea becasue the kid will be 3 year 9 months and by the time in 1ST std the kid will be 6 Year 9 Months
Infact it would be good if the school follows some age band. Eg Brigade school (CBSE)accept Nursery admission for 2009-2010 for kids born between Dec2005 and Nov 2006.
( Means 2.5 year - 3.5 year kids will be eligible for Nursery) and when they go to 1st std age will be in between 5.5 and 6.5.This make more sense than what is followed in DPS etc where the June age cute off very strict.

      Thanks,
      Abhi

My son’s DOB is 28.11.98. We are currently in the UK. My son is studying in Year 5(class V as per Indian school). We are moving to Bangalore in dec 2008. As the academic sessions there commence around may-june, do I seek his admission to class VI? My another concern is selecting CBSE/ICSE school? Please offer me some advice as to how I go about his admission.

    294. ronith, 6. November 2008, 23:12

      Hi,

Most of the CBSE schools like DPS ( not all schools ) have strict age cute off. So for 6th class entry the age should be 11yrs as on June. Since your son is in UK the best bet would be ICSE and later IGCSE option is easy. Where are you going to settle down in Bangalore? School selection should be according to this.

      Thanks
      ronith

      hi,
my son (4 years old) has got admission to Greenwood and we are v confused about whether we should put him there or not as I have read both good and bad reviews. we are also new to Bangalore. Most people seem to talk about the great infrastructure. what i want to know is whether the quality of the teachers is good - because to me that is the most important factor - because mortar and bricks make a school not! :)
do call (9731988112) or email as we have to decide by tomorrow and pay fees or cancel
      regards

      Hi
Thanks for helping those who want to return 2 India.
We have plans to return next year 2009 summer. We own a flat in Blore in Bannerghatta Road. We have a 6yr old daughter who is doing her 1st grade in USA.
We are initally planning to put her in an International school. I need some help in planning. I would really appreciate some suggestions from you:
      1) How should I start searching for school and when is the admission time? Do I have to be physically present to get the application forms in schools?
      2) Are there any good International school near or in Bannerghatta Road?
      3) When does most of the International school reopen after Summer Holidays?
      Thanks

      Hi,

My son is studying in Sri Kumaran’s ICSE syllabus in Tata Silk Farm. The school is shifting to Kanaapura Road(11Km from my home) from next year. We have Cramel school in Padmanabhanagr right close to my house. Is it worth changing the school to avoid long travel distance?

    303. anupama, 19. November 2008, 23:12

We are returning to bangalore from the US in jan’09. Our daughter is doing her 7th grade here and will continue the same in India.
After studying in the more relaxed, minimal writing, more lab work and computer based multi-choice exam system here, in 7th grade we thought we had to put her in a school which will give us a choice of IGCSE in 8th grade in case she thought she could not cope with the ICSE/ CBSC boards.
We basically shortlisted schools based on the information on their websites and also from some “horses mouth” revies from friends and their friends etc…
We had shortlisted Inventure, Greenwood High and Bangalore International with our daughter leading the process based on her self made criteria.

My husband visited them and have been particularaly impressed with the Greenwood High so we have decided to go ahead with Greenwood High. Will keep you all posted once our daughter feels that she has got what she was looking for in the school by enjoying going to school everyday beacuse that is what will matter in the end.

People retuning from US will find the schooling in India expensive beacause the schools that we are talking about fall in the category of ‘private schools” in the US…where as most parents in the US will have their kids in Public school system which is almost free but is quite good in many places. Not all.

The deeper we, as parents try to go into the info on various schools, with a sense of duty and responsibility , of been able to give the best of everything to our children, it can get very exasperating and confusing.

I think we need to take a good look at our child’s individual needs, his/her inclinations and interests.
Please involve kids who can be involved, in searching for her future school and see what matters to her/him…and keep OUR idealistic expectations a bit low and see where you can reach together..
Involving our daughter has been a great learning for us to know what “she” looks for in “her” shcool…it has helped her “look forward” to come here and go to that school….making our job of motivating her much easier…

I really hope all goes well for our daughter…we will judge the school from our daughters emotional and academic well being.

Hope each of you find your school soon where your kids will be happy.
I can be reached at anupamabp@hotmail.com

      Hi all,

This will be really useful info for those
      living in Sarjapur Road-Varthur-Airport road-Whitefield belt .
Sarjapur is famous for bangalore’s best schools .Now GEAR is setting up schools on Sarjapur area in collboration with Confident Group. I came to know that Confident-GEAR Montessori Plus is going to start in this year and admission has been already started. Confident-GEAR Creative Leadership School (CBSE ), Sarjapur is in plan.

I heard that GEAR is pretty good because of their teaching methodology and strong montessori foundation.

      More info is available at
      http://www.gear.ac.in/?ui=gfp

Probably any parents already gone through school hunting process can comment.

      Thanks,

      Hi,

Among the schools you listed down,

Cambridge, Prakriya - Not much information. I read that both are ICSE syllabuses
      Greenwood high -
ICSE/IGCSE International fees. Admission will not be a problem. Lots of extra curricular, facilities and school building. It was written fresh approach at the main entrance. I am not sure about the teaching and academics.

GEAR - CBSE School. Very tough to get in. As per parents feedback it is an excellent school.

NPS HSR - CBSE school.New branch of NPS. Again admission will be tough.

Both GEAR and NPS may not have international facilities or buildings, but never heard anything negative from parents.

      Thanks

      Hi,

I think most of the regular schools admission will be completed by Jan 2009 for the academic year 2009-2010. I’m assuming you would be looking for IGCSE/IB schools..

Schools like Green Wood and Inventure allow round the year admission.
You have the option of IGCSE. Ofcourse any foreign language option will be there.
For IB, TISB or Indus are the schools to look. All these schools cater mostly NRIs or expats. Pls check with the schools directly.

I do not know much about Vibgyor to comment.

      Hi,
Can anyone give your feedback abt Cambridge School, NPS & Freedom International?. I stay in HSR. My son is now 2 yrs 10 months and he is going to EURO kids now. I am thinking whether to put him in a school or continue for one more year with EURO kids in nursery and put him in school next year.
Which would be a better option? Pls suggest
Also in Cambridge they have given date till 15th Dec to pay fees but NPS has not started the selection process yet. Am in a fix as to what to do.

Ranjini, actually for my daughter (2.6 months now) i have got application
from cambridge public school hsr. i have requested them to provide me
time to pay the fees and so they have given me time till feb 10th. actually
i got this time just to decide abt the school.
my confusion is whether to admit my daughter to a preschool like eurokids etc
or directly admit her to traditional school like cambridge. i felt i would
admit my daughter to preschool (roots-to-wings is what i have shortlisted which
is opposite to bda complex and a new one with good facitilities) coz in preschool
she might get good attention than a normal school.

feedback about cambridge school in hsr is generally good, though few feedback
is that the coaching is moderate. but i had been there during a school exhibition
and found that the students are of good discipline, knowledge and bright. so i
think it is a good school. also we spoke to a couple of parents who said it is
little expensive but school is generally good and they are satisfied. compared to
other schools i think fees is also not very high.

Also pls give me feedback about Eurokids, jumbo kids etc in HSR. I’m planning to
move to hsr and admit my daughter to any of these preschools from january since she
has not started it yet (though i have already shortlisted one, i would like to get
feedback about the other preschools too)

      my mail id is gb_raj@rediffmail.com

      Hi, Rupa,

Is it the old Cambridge Public School ? http://www.cambridgepublicschool.com. There are 2 schools in HSR - one is relocated from Koramangala in 2003 and is close to BDA complex. I heard Cambridge Public School in HSR is good from 3-4 people and have not heard any bad feedback. I am thinking it is the old school.

      Dear All,

Kasturi Nagr Presidency is charging 55 K for nursery and its 30% hike compared to last year.but they have constructed new building and looks like a s/w company, everywhere concrete and not a single plant/tree in school.I visited 10 schools (from whitefiled to Indiranagr)for my 3.5 yr old daughter. SSB international is like a 60×40 plot school and if ur kid is little outdoor type,it has nothing to offer.Poornapragna school office bearers will not talk to u as they think parent is an aggressive wild animal.SSRVM in varthur is the most unhiegenic school i have ever seen.
Sisugriha and Ryan response was good among all.
can anybody pls give views on Frank antonys Public school.

      Hi Bharat
Thanks for your reply….enquired the admission status in NPS HSR today and they said admissions are over..so we were not fortunate to get admission there…Guess Cambridge is a better option now…they hve asked us to pay the fees before 15th of Jan..my only concern is if i continue in playschool for another year my son may lag back when i put him in some ICSE school next year…so, thinking of going ahead with Cambridge now..they r asking for a donation of 50k which is gonna b a big loss if we get transferred elsewhere in a year or 2…
Euro kids is deftly a good pre-school…their method of teaching is v impressive…Jumbo kids shd be fine but i am not much aware of it…

      Hi,

I am a teacher by profession and I have moved from Gurgaon.I was working with a progressive school called Shikshatar. At Shikshantar, the children enjoyed freedom and learned self discipline. Apart from academics, life skills was an important part of the curriculm. Teaching was innovative and the environment provided the flexibility to transact the curriculum in ways teachers believed.

I am looking for a similar work environment and would appreciate recommendations. My email id is nilishac@gmail.com

      Thank you!

Thanks Sankool for your valuabale feedback on Cambridge(old one) . But I got the admission for my daughter into new Cambridge located at 11th Cross, 22nd Main, (Near BMTC Depot), HSR Layout-1st Sector.
Do you find any difference with old Cambridge and new Cambridge.

Please share your feedback on new Cambridge.

      Thanks&Regards,

You said you did not like the staff at India International. What made you feel that way? What did you think of their infrastructure and campus and their attention to extra curricular activities?

I have a daughter who is 2.3 right now and I am looking at reasonable but ICSE schools which have high quality education as well as a balance of other activities.

Your feedback would be really helpful as we just visited India International and seemed to like the atmosphere.

      Hi, Rupa,

I am finalizing my daughters school admission in old cambridge school today. Old Cambridge School has been in the area for a longer time than the new one. My opinions are based only on reviews and comments from other people. I do not have any direct feedback regarding new cambridge school. It looks like the facilities are better in old school rather than new school. I came to know the management of both the schools are same. So, it should not matter much. Also, the old school is moving to a new building location half a km from the current location sometime this yr or next year.

      Thanks & Regards,
      Sankool

We r moving near whitefield area in academic yr 2009-10. We are looking for schools for my kids 3yr in Nursery and 6yr old in 1st grade. Since we have no relatives in Bangalore we started looking on web for our answers. After research we r thinking for VIBGYOR Hsr in ICSE board. But have lot of question in mind.
Since this is a new school how is its reputation?
How r the teacher? Does the children get individual attention?
Is there any donation other than what is written on fees structure of the school?

I will be glad if someone can tell information abt the school. Also suggest some good apartment complex near the schools.
      Thanks in advance

Hi there, thanks for this window to Bangalore schools, exactly what we needed! We are relocating to Bangalore from USA and my daughter is in 1st grade in a blue ribbon school. My one and only concern is her schooling in India. We would prefer an International school with IGCSE curriculum to keep her international education going and to secure the same for future as well. Personally, Iwas considering TIBS but its beyond our reach. Ryan and Aditi International were the other names on your minds. But after reading your article we have second thoughts. Which do you think would be the best school for my daughter. Please do share your experiences with Greenwood High, the fees and your suggestions(they are extremely valuable). Why did you not go for Inventure Academy? Also could I please get the contact no. for Inventure and Greenwood High?-Obliged, Sunetra Basu.

      Hi,

We are planning to move from UK by first week of March 09. I have a daughter who is four years. She is going to nursery here. We are going to live in CV Raman Nagar. Can anyone help me with details regarding the admission in NPS Indira Nagar and also reviews about schools like Poorna Pragna, Gear, Geetanjali Vidhyalaya, Kangaroo Kids and Chinmaya Vidhyalaya? Are they still having admissions open? I also want to know what is the correct age for Kindergarten/ Montessori education as there is no correct information about it. Please someone help me as early as possible. Thankyou for your information.

    352. Vidya, 29. January 2009, 3:39

      Hi,
I have been doing some research on school admissions in Bangalore bcoz my son needs to get in to LKG for the academic year 2009-10. I have learnt that NPS is tough to get in, not sure what their admission criterion is bcoz although they say they give preference to wards of alumni, one of close friend’s ward was not called for an interview. Their admission process doesnot seem tranparent and also the school is very book-oriented; may be the best in education , but donot expect any encouragement for sports/ other extra curricular activities.
Other good schools are New Horizon (Indiranagar) and Poornaprajna(Tippasandra). The admissions for the former is happenning but not sure about the latter.
I have also heard that Sishugruha is good but their infrastructure is nothing to boast of and also, they take kids only for Montessori and 1st std; they donot have the concept of LKG. If you are at CV Ramannagar then, NCFE also would be close by but there are conflicting reviews; some say the school is good while some parents seem to be unhappy. I have personally checked out their infrastructure and that seems to be quite good if not exceptional.

      Regarding the ages —
for LKG — 4 years completed as on June 09
for montessori — 3 years completed as on June 09.

Some schools are very particluar , for example when I applied in Bethany , they said that my son can apply only for montessori although he will be 3 years 11 months in June 09 (just one month short of 4 years ) while some schools are flexible (NCFE is okay with 3 years 8 months as of June 09) .

      Hope this helps.

      Hi,

I am looking to move to Bangalore Dec 2009. I have a 4 year old (will be 5, Sep 2009) who will be up for UKG in June 2009 (he will be joining KinderGarten August this year). We are currently thinking Dec 2009, but are willing to extend this to April next year since school admissions will be a problem middle of the year.

I was wondering about GreenWood High admission guidelines - website says 6+ by June for Class I - how stringent are these ? Will they be flexible to accomodate a child 3 months younger than their guidelines for admission year 2010 ?

Since you have a daily access to GreenWood High, it would be great if you can perform these enquiries and let me know. Phone enquiries dont seem to be entertained by schools in Bangalore, and we receive very curt answers when we call. Any information from you would be greatly appreciated. (Also any information on how NOT to loose a school year would be appreciated - Bangalore schools seem to have such a variable cut-off age, that I really dont know where and what)

      Thanks and Regards
      Priya

    357. gkr, 8. February 2009, 9:36

Regarding Frank Anthony, if the admission is for 1st Std and above, my experience (in 2008) is that they will ask you to Contact them in May end or Early June and will consider if there are vacancies. You will not be asked to buy applications forms.

To give it a shot you can write up a letter to principal with academic records and mail it to them and keep it as a reference when you contact them.

      Hey Rakesh,

I think you should try Inventure Academy. The school is on the Whitefield-Sarjapur Road and will be close to where you are. My son studies in Inventure Academy too. He’s in the 4th grade and we are really happy with the school. The reasons we chose Inventure over others schools are because:

      1. The curriculum at Inventure Academy is unique in its weave of inventive thinking, multiple intelligences and differentiated learning. The school has taken the best practices from both progressive as well as traditional schools. Their curriculum focuses primarily on student achievement both in and out of the classroom.

Inventure Academy is affiliated to ICSE (CISCE), Check Point & IGCSE (CIE). It is also registered with the University of Cambridge International Examinations to offer ICSE to its students. The school follows a learner centric curriculum, taking into account the capability of each child.

      Hi,

      This is urgent.

I am staying in Mahalakshmi-Layout near ISKCON.
We tried for NPS Rajajinagar for my daughter for LKG class and could not get the admission. I tried for Sophia’s school and they told that they don’t take students for LKG.
Through one of my contacts, I tried for Sophia’s school and that person has promised the admission in Sophia’s school for a price of Rs 1.5 lakhs (apart from the fees).
      My question is
      1) Is it not too expensive or is it worth it considering the school ?
      2) I am little concerned that since its ICSE syllabus…is it very tough compared to CBSE syllabus ?
      3) What are the other choices ? I am intrested in DPS North, but will be too much of a commute from M.L. Layout to Yelahanka.
      4) How is Venkat International school and cluney convent ? Which one is better ?

Would really appreciate your answers on this.

      Thanks,

I stay at Kalyananagar (HRBR Layout) near Kammanahalli. My son is 2yrs 2 months now. Is there any good pre-schools nearby. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Try Trio World School. This is an International School with IGCSE. I have seen their school buses in Kammanahalli area. Their contact number on the bus was 080-4061 1222. If you are looking for an ICSE school, then you can try Vidya Niketan near Hebbal Flyover.

HI, I have two boys . Going to grade 3 & 8. I am opting for CBSE schools. I have short listed Presidency east & DPS East as it will be easy for them to adjust as they are from Global Indian International school in Singapore. But both these schools seem to be new. Now, I want to know if Presedency and DpS east already has std 10. Can we be sure about their standards in the future & especially 10th results. DPS north is having a proven record but the fees is much more than DPS East.
Could you help which is better Presidency east or Dps east? or should we go for proved schools like other DPS and NPS branches. please help.

      Hi All,

I am new to Bangalore. Please share your comments or valuable feedback on ‘Cambridge Public school’ (New School) 11th cross,HSR Layout, Bangalore. I am looking U.K.G admission to my son for 2009-10. As I approached the school, the management told that 45k is the admission fee they are charging. I am OK with fee structure. But whether the school is following best practices in teaching and also giving priority for sports/extra curricular activities to grow up the child in a matured manner….
I request the parents or who have good knowledge with this school either directly or indirectly, please share your genuine positive/negative feedback.
      Wiating eagerly…

      Godha,

Try making a visit to the school n talking to the Princi if u can. I cannot assure u about the standard. I was quite impressed. Heard they have a lot of extra curricular activities. I believe it will have same standard as other DPS (personal view). The princi is quite friendly n I’m sure u won’t regret talking to her.

THERE ARE NO GOOD SCHOOLS FOR RETURNING NRIS IN BANGALORE

I have been living in the USA for the last 22 years and planning on relocating to Bangalore in August. Even if for some reason, I am not able to move, I will be sending my son to India to start his 7th grade. For sure I will be relocating in March of next year.

I visited Bangalore in December/January as a pre move preparation. One of the items in my agenda was to look for a good school for my son. Since I will be residing in HSR layout, I decided to visit schools within 15 km radius of HSR layout.

Initially, it was a big disappointment. Though from a syllabus standpoint, Indian schools are good, the school environment is no way comparable to International standard. Many schools carry the name International. Schools have mushroomed all over Bangalore. Many of them lack infrastructure that is basic in the USA. As someone mentioned in this forum, starting a school has become a big business in India.

My son loves swimming and soccer. He studied in a school system that is very informal (never wore school uniform in all his school years); loves music and is part of school band (orchestra). With all additional activities he has managed to keep good grades. My aim was to look for a school that is good at academics, has basic infrastructure and sports facilities, informal and friendly environment and above all has an American school environment.

Anyway, I visited some 15 schools and could not find one school that I felt had everything I am looking for. Right now, I have taken admission at Treamis World School which comes close to having International standard infrastructure and best practices. They have a huge swimming pool that I am sure my son will enjoy. The good part is they offer CBSE as well as IGCSE. My son can choose the one he wants in 9th grade even though he does not have any idea about either of these. I think the other school that has this combination is Jain International but that is purely residential. I also liked the Treamis residential facility. It is just like in the US. The fact that majority of the promoters of this school are NRIs and that they have collaborative arrangement with US schools gives me some confidence that the school will maintain global standard.

      Hi,
We live in Boston, USA & have plans to move to Bangalore in 2-3months. I am seeking admission for my daughter (3.5yrs old). She is currently going to pre-school in a Montessori school here. Could you pls suggest a good school in Bangalore that is good in academics, teaching & definitely giving individual attention to kids? I am looking for CBSE/ICSE/International syllabus. Appreciate your response on this.

      thanks in advance,
      Sugee

How is GEAR Inovative Intl School? Any feedbacks. This is another school I am considering now. Got good feedbacks so far. If you have any pl share.

I heard BGS is not good. Their school yearly magazine has no work portrayed by school kids though they have upto 12th grade. It talks only about the management B’days etc……… So, dropped the idea of putting my kids there.

Thanks in advnce for your valuable feedbacks.

    383. Ravi, 16. March 2009, 0:33

PSBB (Padma Sheshadri Bala Bhawan) - PSBB Learning Leadership Academy (PSBB LLA) took from me Rs.51 k right on the day they said they would take my daughter in for Pre-KG. So I paid 40 k admission fee and about 11 k first term fee(that’s in beginning of November 2008) for school term starting on June 2009. That’s about 7 months in advance. Most importantly, they did not give me any time to think about the school and then decide. Immediately I have cough up the amount or else… ‘you will not get a place for your kid in our esteemed school’. What kind of policy is this? It only shows that the school is totally fearful that it will not get enough children to fill up their class rooms if they give some time to the parents to decide. Total insecurity! After doing more research I found that this school is not having good reviews. I am totally disappointed with myself. How come I came under this pressure? I just went ahead with the PSBB brand name. I think whenever a school or for that matter anyone rushes us to committ without giving time, immediately a bell should ring in our head and become paranoid. Its a costly lesson for me!

Also its really sorry state of affairs that many institutions have made a business out of giving education to kids. The primary goal of an educational institute should never be money. Rather money should be considered as a necessary condition to give excellent educational facilities so that children develop their knowledge about the world and their own sense of place in it in a safe and secure environment. Instead schools have made money as their main goal and have totally ignored the real purpose of education. Also these days parents feel totally helpless and try to get admission in the ‘best’ schools by hook or crook. People, its time to take a step back and think. Is the money spent on conventional schooling is really worth it?

      Sugee,

We are moving to Bangalore too in 2-3 months. We currently live in Dallas. We were looking for a school with the same features you had in mind - good in academics, friendly teachers, individual attention, CBSE and International syllabus. My husband made a trip to Bangalore only to look at all the schools. Finally he took admission at Treamis World School. It has everything you asked for + Montessori in preschool.

      Hope this helps,

I appreciate your effort and time.

We are planning to move to B’lore this May.
Can you please sujjest us a good school
we are not particular about the place as we will decide either to rent or buy closer to school.
Also we are not particular on International schooling stuff.

All we need it good school with discipline and a bit extra curricular activities.

      We appreciate your advice.

      Thanks

Hi all. We moved from Dallas, USA .I was looing for a school with international standards where my children could adjust. AFter running from school to school i found Freedom International SChool. The school has teh infra structure in terms of classroom space, furniture, teachers, academics, extracirricular activities . After hunting down all the CBSE and ICSE schools on Sarjapur Road like DPS, Primus, GreenWood High, Gear Foundation ,i decided on for Freedom International in HSR Layout. It is more than a year and i am totally satisfied with this school. I have found an apartment close to school. The school has perfect balance of academics and activities. ANd they are reasonable too, though money is never a criteria for any parent. Go for this school you will find it really good.

Hi. My 8 yrs old is going to nps koramangala. For my 4 yr old i didnt get a call from them. We have also livied in Dallas for three years where my elder child got his preschool education. I found out Freedom Intrenational School as very good school and my younger one is studying in this school. This school is almost same as nps in terms of studies, activities, discipline. My child has become very becom every creative and hsi general knowledge has a good level. Then i never tried for nps again. Parents, giving a high fees does not gurantee a good education. Freedom has lesser fee structure then NPS, but it is as good as NPS. I am totally statisfied.

    390. Rajeev Banerjee, 30. March 2009, 1:27

Hi all. All those parents who are looing for a good school that provides international infrastructure to the children, pic up Freedom International. The school, though new has a very good future. the management board and the advisory board are very successfula people in their fields. My two daughters are studying in class 4th and 6th. The school provides good academics, extra-activities, sports, hobby classes, language laboratories. Ater living in Canada when we returned to Bangalore, we were really concerned how our children would adjust here. Now they are always excited to go to school. They do not follow the bookish pattern. They take children to laboratries and make them do their own exercises. They are helping them developp the logic and creative skills. I find teachers cooperative. Whenever we have any issue, we meet them often. I can understand the delima of all the parents when they return back from foreign countries about their children’s education. I have gone through it by myself. Freedom international is situated in HSR which is still in the city and not so far away as many other schools are. The school and its environment is very good and is providing excellent education to its students. Around this time the admissions are almost over but sometimes there are chances, parents contact the school soon.

I am moving to India from Frankfurt,Germany. My son was in an International school here so I would like to continue that in India too.Pls let me know your experiences with Greenwood and Indus Internationals since these are the 2 schools that we have shortlisted.

    392. Rohan Sharma, 31. March 2009, 9:36

Hi Anne Mathew. My son was studied in Greenwood high in Nursery, LKG and UKG. They were very easy on children and chlidren hardly learnt anything. From 1st std he went to the main campus. But it was more than unstisfactory in terms of academics and school management. Now he is studying in Freedom International. There is a very good academic and extra-cirricular pattern in this school. Academics are stressed well. Student- teacher ratio is 25-26/1 from 1st grade onwards. He gets good personal attention.

Indus International is a good one too. I have herad a lot about them. Do not select DPS and Primus International at all. They make good money from parents and in terms of academics, they hardly do anything. The faclities are more for show in DPS rather than students using them.

Check out Indus International and Freedom International.

      Thanks

    397. Shweta, 5. April 2009, 0:07

Hi Usha, the good ares with facilities are BTM Layout, Koramangala, HSR Layout. You will find all the facilities and the schools will be closer too. For maths tution you will have to contact aparment society information.

      Shweta

    398. Mamta, 6. April 2009, 7:47

Hi Anne, Greenwood High is a better option than Indus International. Have you checked out Freedom International? It is a good one too. Do not select DPS and Primus International as they are not so good at the core.

      Hi,
We are moving to Bangalore at May end. Is there anything I can do now to start applying to schools in Bangalore? My son will be going to 1st grade and daughter to LKG.

      Appreciate your help.

      Thanks

      Mugdha

    403. Ranjan, 8. April 2009, 23:35

Ritesh, if you are going to be working at Electronics City, try Treamis World School. It is near Electronics City. The advantage is that you can always take off from work during free time and visit your child in the school. They also have before and after school programs. In Banneraghatta, HSR and BTM, you will only find traditional schools. In Sarjapur, you will find TISB another International school. If you are not particular about International school, you will find schools every other mile or two in all the places you have mentioned.

If you are going to be working in Electronics City, there are plenty of apartments available. You will never have problem in finding one. You don’t have to give permanent address for reserving seat. You can always give the correct address after you have settled down.

    404. Karan, 10. April 2009, 6:21

      Hey People !
If you are looking for a school in bangalore , just dont go by what people write here , thats their point of view. They may term a school BAD if their kid on doing well putting full blame on School (fault may lie with the parents). What i want to say is , just visit a school and interact with them . U will know.
I feel a good school should have a culture , good teachers. Thats all . Dont see the big bulidings , AC buses/rooms .. see what kind of education your child will be getting.. eventually that matters.

    405. Vikas Sah, 10. April 2009, 6:35

      @Karan

You have a valid point but the thing to remember is that all schools present their best face to new incoming kids and their parents. The objective here is that people share their experience to make us a wise decision.

You might want to confront the school management by some of the information shared here and see what they have to say.

    408. Jayanth, 15. April 2009, 0:26

      Hi,

As a parent of the school I was puzzled to see the perception on Inventure being relaxed about academics, far from it. We as parents find it rather challenging! Perhaps this perception comes from the fact that they put a lot of emphasis on ensuring that the students enjoy coming to school & focus on excelling in at least one co-curricular activity, in addition to playing sport every day. Their academics are aimed at ensuring that students are able not just to gain knowledge (through rote learning which is very popular in traditional schools or learning just via one prescribed text book per subject) but to be able to understand, analyze, present and evaluate concepts.

Two of their students ranked top 10 in India for the Science Olympiad and a standardized test, another three ranked in the top 100 in the International math Olympiad. I visited the test centres during the second phase of the Olympiad and found that 25% of the students who had qualified for this were in fact from Inventure.

My name is Neeth, we relocated to Bangalore in October 2008, but my son who did his 1st term UKG in Kerala, was then refused admission in most of the schools in Bannergatta Road area, saying that it was middle of the year. One of the schools promised us an admission this academic year to Std1 and gave us a date to pay the fees and donation in March 2009 at their office. But when we went to pay the money, they said sorry and that they cannot give admissions and were not even ready to clarify….
Now we are in deep trouble. All admissions for the 2009-10 academic year is closed in most of the good schools. My son whos 6.4 now needs admission to 1st std, prefrebly CBSE. One School located on Arekre, ACES Maaruthi Magnolia Public School is now ready to admit my son, fee/annum 35,000excluding transport… Any feedback on the school is much appreciated??? Please.
Can you also let me know about any other schools on Bannergatta road where admissions are open for Std 1 with affordable fees.

I returned from abroad and was looking for schools for my son in Whitefield area. I had selected Greenwood & Inventure, based on many positive feedbacks from many. I must say that I & my wife were very disappointed at the way admission staff at Greenwood greeted us. She made us wait for 45 min and then she started providing a fast orientation, she was getting tons of calls and getting distracted. She was orienting as if she was busy to catch the next flight. She was not professional at all. We had our son enrolled in Inventure as the greeting was very different and super. The CEO sat with us for 1 hr and provided complete orientation. Admission staff had full knowledge what she was talking about. I was also impressed with their way of teaching. If you want your kids to get started high on academics, then this may not be the pick. We picked up because it has focus on overall development and they said thru experienced learning at basics they can excel academically better as they sit for exams later. Also my son liked the chool. Hope this helps.

Lot of questions on CMR, SJR and other schools in Kalyannagar, Banaswadi area. CMR is focussed only on academics, little extra curricular activities, small playground, and staff is not parent friendly. Their focus is on finding brilliant kids and keep focusing on them so that they get good grades in the process not so brilliant get left behind. There are other schools too in the area such as JSS, SJR and if you are willing to travel further on Hennur Road, there are several schools such DPS North, Bangalore International and Vidyaniketan academy.

Your article on Bangalore international schools was very useful. I am looking for a good international school for my child going into grade 6. Can someone recommend good international schools or share their experiences on middle schools?

Was ineterested to know where can my 3.5 year old boy learn international pronounciation? Including phonics which make spellings tidier. And which school concentrates on sound mathematical fundamentals?

      Hi,

Thanks for maintaining this blog Vinod I stay in Bangalore Koramangala and searching for school for my son who is 2yrs 8 months now and going to a playschool.

NPS Koramangla , Indiranagar and HSR are abvious choices but not sure about chances of getting admission so looking at Prakriya , DPS ,Freedom International as well.
I could not find any feedback on Chinmaya Vidhyalaya in Koramangala from the activities conducted there this seems to be only school rooted in Indian culture, may be that’s why people do not prefer it. Can some one provide any feedback and review on this.

Well most of the sites and blogs are maintained from point of view of NRIs and schools also cater only to NRI needs but then there are around 70 lakh fully resident people in Bangalore as well but who cares.

Looks to me that finding a school is going to be uphill task so will keep people posted here.

      Regards
      Amit

      Friends,
I will be moving to Bangalore by end of September 2009. My place of work would be near Domlur, the old HAL airport , golf course area.

My boy is currently in 4th grade, please suggest me some CBSE schools that i should study. According to the availability of schools we will be looking for apartments (preferably gated community with all facilities;pool play area etc), so that kids do not have to travel a lot.

      Hello Amit,

Your comment on parents not seeking admission to schools rooted in Indian culture made me chuckle. I live in koramangala. My younger son goes to NPS(very much rooted in Indian culture) which is a excellent school. Older son (going to 11th) goes to Ebenezer International school which is not a bad school though about 16 kms from koramangala. Both have very good bus service. Needless to say the international school is expensive. I will send an email to my apartment complex group to see if anyone has children going to Chinmaya school. There is also Bethany school in koramangala which i heard is good too. Good luck.

      Thanks

My kid will be 3.6yrs in June 09. I am interested in NPS (Indiranagar). I see that they have both Kindergarten and Montessori streams. Do both these streams start at 3+ age? Can I admit my kid to LKG at 3.6yr? For kindergarten do they have pre-nursery to start a 3 age?

      Dear All,
If u r planning to put your little one in We Care, then this is not at all a right place. They try to impress parents with the toys that they got from US (Which also we get it in India) and with their specious class rooms.Believe me I was with them few months so I have experienced it.People like Reshma and Sonal hire teachers who r not well qualified ,they wants someone who work for them 6 to 10 hours for very less salary. What I wants to say is that they charge heavily but poor quality of education.Reshma is also a heartless lady that I have ever seen in my life.” More u pay,More quality u get”is not true here. The logo “We Care” doesn’t apply here for your kids, that applies for your money.
