Compilation of Free Antivirus Options

Antivirus is a must for any system these days but do not come cheap. So what do you do when you do not have the luxury to spend money on yearly subscription for the likes of Norton Antivirus, McAfee, CA Antivirus etc?

The answer is, you have several options:

  1. Go and download Google Pack from Google which gives you free subscription to Norton Virus scan
  2. Get free AVG Antivirus from Grisoft. The free version is only available for private, non-commercial use. This is supported on  Windows Vista and Linux.
  3. Get free avast! 4 home edition Antivirus. This is also available for free for home users and non-commercial use. This is supported on Windows Vista as well. avast have their Antivirus version available for Linux also.
  4. ClamWin Antivirus for Windows (not available for Vista). This is an open source project. It does not however include a real time scanner and you will have to manually scan files.
  5. Comcast customers get McAfee Internet Security suite free with their Comcast account. They can download it from here. You will need to register with Comcast first.
  6. Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic is available for free and can be downloaded from here. It supports all windows versions (including vista), Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris.
  7. If you feel your computer has been compromised, you can try McAfee free scan available at http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp. This web based tool will help you detect viruses but unfortunately won’t clean them.

Some Fun and Useful Google Map Apps

I have been experimenting with Google Maps for a recent project and needed a tool to get latitude and longitude for any location. Here are two tools written to get the same:

  1. Get Latitude and Longitude for any address you enter
  2. Get Latitude and Longitude for any place you click on the map

These should be fun to play with and one can use those geocodes (latitude and longitude) in various applications.

Google now has support for calculating geocodes for any location (earlier people had to use Yahoo to get the geocodes)

Some other fun Google Map apps to try out:

  1. America’s top 25 meanest drivers cities
  2. A set of interactive Google Maps on different categories on the topic of the 7 Wonders of the World
  3. Ever wondered which map technology is better, Google maps, Live Maps or Yahoo Maps? Try this tool and see for yourself
  4. Da Vinci Code Locations
  5. Forbes Magazine list of the Drunkest Cities in America
  6. Google Maps + Craigslist to create a visual housing search page via dynamic overlays of Craigslist home listings on Google Maps
  7. Up-to-date gas price search with Google Maps station display
  8. Track your packages with Google Maps and RSS feeds! Track UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL
  9. Map a phone number area code to a location
  10. Helps you determine if you are paying too much in rent. Enter an address, apartment size, and rent. It maps nearby units and shows a meter of your price versus min, max and average

I am developing a special section called “tools” on this site, where I will put utility and fun tools and apps.

Free Online Courses On Technology and Variety Of Other Topics

There has been a steady stream of sites coming up with online classes for the public which spread awareness around PC, technology, web, electronics etc.

The ones that I have come across and have found useful are:

  • CNET: It provides online courses on topics related to technology and electronics. They have a team of SME (Subject Matter Experts) which answers questions in the online classrooms. The questions are more in the comments format with the comments available publicly to view. You need to create a free account with them to undertake the courses but the login helps you keep track of courses you enrolled in. Some of the categories in which they have courses are:
    • At Work
    • Digital Camera and Design
    • Home Entertainment
    • Mobile
    • Home PC
    • Software
  • HP Online Learning Center: This learning center from HP provides free online courses in the following areas:
    • Software and technology
    • IT Professionals
    • In-house marketing
    • Business skills

With a free account you can keep track of your courses.

  • Microsoft ELearning: 24/7 online courses are available and lot of them are absolutely free. This is obviously dedicated to Microsoft technologies but has some cutting edge stuff.
